Job Description

Sappi is presently accepting applications for a full-time Utilities Operator position at our Westbrook, Maine facility.

The Utilities Field Operator supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Westbrook Mill by operating, monitoring, inspecting, and maintaining utility systems and equipment essential to the manufacturing process. This includes boilers, steam and condensate systems, water systems, pumps, compressors, and related equipment.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform routine field rounds and inspections of utility systems and equipment.
• Operate and monitor boilers, steam and condensate systems, pumps, motors, compressors, water systems, and related equipment.
• Monitor pressures, temperatures, flows, levels, and other operating conditions and make appropriate adjustments.
• Identify and respond to abnormal equipment and process conditions, alarms, and equipment malfunctions.
• Perform routine boiler operations, including blowdowns, sampling, testing, and authorized chemical adjustments.
• Start, stop, isolate, and return utility equipment to service in accordance with established procedures.
• Assist Maintenance with equipment troubleshooting, inspection, and repair.
• Read and interpret gauges, meters, instrumentation, control panels, and computerized process monitoring systems.
• Maintain accurate operating records and communicate equipment conditions, production impacts, and work status.
• Follow all applicable safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space, hot work, chemical handling, and PPE requirements.
• Work collaboratively with Utilities, Manufacturing, Maintenance, Engineering, and other mill departments to support continuous operations.
• Participate in required training, qualification, and emergency response activities.

Qualifications & Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Maine High Pressure Boiler Operator License preferred; or ability to obtain required licensure within the established qualification period.
• Fork truck certification/experience preferred.
• Industrial, manufacturing, utility, power plant, boiler operation, mechanical, or related experience.
• Experience operating or maintaining boilers, steam systems, pumps, motors, compressors, piping systems, or other industrial equipment.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and basic troubleshooting skills, including the ability to recognize and appropriately respond to abnormal equipment or process conditions.
• Ability to read and interpret operating procedures, gauges, meters, instrumentation, and other equipment information.
• Ability to use computers and electronic systems for process monitoring, communication, and documentation.
• Must obtain and maintain required training, qualifications, licenses, and certifications associated with the position.
• Must be available to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and call-ins as required to support continuous mill operations.
• Must be able to safely work in an industrial manufacturing environment and use required personal protective equipment.
• Demonstrated commitment to safety, teamwork, and reliable operations.
