Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position

The External Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for leading and supporting manufacturing execution, process transfer, and operational performance across Corning’s external manufacturing (EM) network. This role partners closely with Operations, Quality, Engineering, Supply Chain, and External Manufacturers to ensure robust process readiness, consistent execution, and continuous improvement for products built outside Corning-owned facilities.

The position focuses on translating Corning product, process, and quality requirements into reliable, scalable manufacturing solutions at external suppliers, while ensuring compliance with Corning standards for safety, quality, cost, and delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manufacturing & Process Enablement: Provide engineering support for fiber termination manufacturing processes, including process setup, stability, and ongoing execution at External Manufacturers.
  • External Manufacturing Support: Serve as a primary technical interface to External Manufacturers, providing day-to-day engineering support, issue resolution, and guidance to maintain product performance and manufacturing consistency.
  • Process Validation & Readiness: Lead or support process validation activities, including process characterization, capability assessments, PFMEA development, control plan implementation, and first-article / run-at-rate activities.
  • Continuous Improvement: Work closely with Product Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, Planning, and Operations to align requirements, manage changes, and support launch and lifecycle activities.
  • Quality & Compliance: Partner with Quality and Operations to ensure external manufacturing processes meet Corning requirements, addressing nonconformances through root cause analysis, corrective actions, and preventive measures.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Product Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, Planning, and Operations to align requirements, manage changes, and support launch and lifecycle activities.
  • Supplier Engagement & Governance: Support supplier technical reviews, performance evaluations, and change management activities to drive accountability and long-term manufacturing health.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline with 0 - 5 years of experience in a related field.
  • Exposure to manufacturing processes involving fiber or optical assemblies.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing operations, process engineering, or industrial engineering in a production environment.
  • Hands-on experience with manufacturing process control, troubleshooting, and improvement.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with Operations, Quality, and Engineering teams
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities across suppliers and programs in a dynamic manufacturing environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience supporting or working directly with External Manufacturers or contract manufacturing sites.
  • Experience with new product introduction (NPI), process transfer, or production ramp activities.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma concepts.
  • Experience using manufacturing data to drive yield, cost, or quality improvements.
  • Exposure to multi-site or global manufacturing operations.

The range for this position is $82,974.00 - $114,090.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
