Job Description

Manufacturing/Mechanical Engineering Intern

Join Varex and gain real-world engineering experience working with products that have been designed, manufactured, tested, and supported in a regulated environment. We are looking for a motivated undergraduate engineering student to support an initiative focused on reviewing, testing, organizing, and strengthening Design and Development File (DDF) documentation for legacy products in alignment with ISO 13485 requirements. You will work alongside experienced Manufacturing, Design, Quality, and Regulatory professionals to evaluate existing engineering records, identify documentation gaps, improve traceability, and help assemble clear and complete technical documentation. This internship provides a unique opportunity to see how engineering requirements, drawings, risk management, testing, manufacturing processes, and design changes come together throughout the lifecycle of a real product.

What You'll Do

  • Review and organize engineering and design documentation for existing products.
  • Help evaluate Design and Development Files for completeness, consistency, and traceability.
  • Assist with connecting design requirements, engineering outputs, risk controls, verification and validation evidence, and design changes.
  • Review engineering drawings, specifications, test reports, procedures, and other technical records.
  • Help identify missing or incomplete documentation and work with engineers to determine appropriate supporting evidence.
  • Support development of document lists, matrices, spreadsheets, and other tools used to organize technical information.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, Design Engineering, Quality, and Regulatory team members.
  • Gain practical exposure to ISO 13485 and engineering within a regulated product-development environment.

Basic Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering
  • Completed at least introductory engineering coursework.
  • Basic ability to read and understand engineering drawings, specifications, and technical information.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Comfortable working with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with engineering drawings and CAD tools such as SolidWorks.
  • Exposure to manufacturing processes, tolerance analysis, materials, or mechanical design.
  • Familiarity with FMEA, risk analysis, or engineering risk-management concepts.
  • Experience with laboratory testing, engineering test reports, or data analysis.
  • Familiarity with design verification and validation (V&V).
  • Exposure to quality systems, document control, or engineering change processes.
  • Familiarity with ISO 13485 or regulated product development.
  • Strong Excel skills for organizing and analyzing technical information.
  • Interest in medical devices, X-ray imaging technology, manufacturing, product development, quality engineering, or regulatory compliance.

Students who have completed or are currently taking courses in any of the following areas are encouraged to apply:

  • Manufacturing Processes
  • Mechanical or Product Design
  • Engineering Materials / Materials Science
  • Engineering Drawing and CAD
  • Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA)
  • Quality Engineering
  • Engineering Statistics
  • Design of Experiments (DOE)
  • Reliability Engineering
  • FMEA / Risk Analysis
  • Product Development
  • Verification, Validation, and Testing
  • Engineering Project Management

What You'll Gain

This internship is designed to provide more than documentation experience. You'll gain exposure to the complete engineering lifecycle of regulated products, including how requirements become designs, how designs are verified and validated, how manufacturing processes support product realization, and how objective engineering evidence is maintained over a product's lifetime. You'll also develop practical experience working across engineering, quality, and regulatory disciplines, providing a strong foundation for future careers in manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, product development, quality engineering, or medical-device engineering.

Prior medical-device or regulatory experience is not required. We are looking for an undergraduate who is technically curious, detail-oriented, eager to learn, and excited about understanding how real products are designed, manufactured, tested, and documented.
