What to Expect

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Manufacturing Engineer to lead the design, development, and ramp of cell manufacturing equipment and processes with the cell manufacturing team in Fremont, CA. This role own equipment development for laser welding and assembly processes – leading equipment specification development, equipment design, line layout, installation, commissioning, validation, ramp-up, and handover to production. You will help ensure that our processes and equipment meet the highest standards of safety, quality, and throughput. Your will work closely with internal teams including Product Design, Controls, Operations, EH&S, Quality, and Production Engineering, and will coordinate with equipment suppliers to design and develop manufacturing equipment. This role will be based in Fremont, CA – with some international travel required to visit internal partner teams & external integrators/vendors.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and develop manufacturing equipment for laser welding and cell assembly processes
  • Manage installation, qualification and ramp-up of manufacturing equipment for pilot cell development and high-volume cell production
  • Ensure manufacturing lines meet uptime, availability, and reliability metrics – including OEE, cycle time, quality, and yield
  • Collaborate with Production Engineering, EH&S, Quality, Operations and Product Design team drive towards maximum yield, quality, machine availability and output
  • Work independently and with vendors to understand root cause of failures, propose design or component changes, and implement and validate equipment modifications
  • Generate and maintain documentation including machine and process specifications, drawings, BOMs, spare parts lists, PFMEAs, control plans, manufacturing instructions, and process flow charts
  • Develop and deliver training to operations and maintenance technicians to ensure seamless handover of new equipment
  • Actively use tool data sources (e.g. MES reports) to quantitatively evaluate and track tool performance and create programs to improve relevant metrics
  • Own manufacturing equipment from inception to handover to production

What You’ll Bring

  • Degree or Equivalent Experience in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field
  • 6+ years of experience working in a production environment and developing/improving automated manufacturing equipment
  • Hands-on experience with automated equipment, sensors, robots, PLCs, and material handling equipment
  • Experience working with laser welding, assembly, and battery cell processes is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute experiments, analyze data, and apply structured problem-solving (DOE, FMEA, 5-Why)
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and proficiency with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or other 2D/3D CAD software

Expected Compensation

$91,600 - $164,400/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits

Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
