The Industrial Power Systems Division currently has a new and exciting opportunity for a Manufacturing Engineer. This position works both independently and as part of a team to maintain and improve processes and systems used in manufacturing. In addition, Manufacturing Engineers function as a specialist and subject matter expert for technical planning throughout a manufacturing facility. As Manufacturing Engineer, you will have an opportunity to provide the technical expertise necessary to design, develop, and implement manufacturing systems, manufacturing operations and state of the art machines.
JOB PURPOSE:
Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of manufacturing processes by leveraging advanced technologies, AI-enabled solutions, digital dashboards, and lean manufacturing principles. The role focuses on improving safety, quality, productivity, and cost efficiency through data-driven decision making, low-cost automation, and smart manufacturing initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in developing, implementing, and improving manufacturing processes for engine assembly, testing, paint, and related operations.
- Support New Product Introduction (NPI) and Concurrent Process and Product Development (CPPD) activities.
- Participate in process validation, manufacturing readiness reviews, and production launch activities.
- Develop and update assembly procedures, process flows, work instructions, BOMs, PFMEAs, and standard work documentation.
- Support implementation of AI-based manufacturing solutions for safety, quality, and productivity improvement.
- Develop and maintain Power BI dashboards and digital visual management tools for manufacturing performance monitoring.
- Analyze manufacturing data to identify trends, bottlenecks, quality issues, and improvement opportunities.
- Support MES, SAP, and shop-floor device integration initiatives to improve process traceability and operational visibility.
- Participate in Industry 4.0 and digital transformation projects involving IoT, smart devices, and connected manufacturing systems.
- Contribute to safety improvement initiatives through risk assessments, ergonomic studies, and implementation of safety controls.
- Support deployment of digital safety technologies such as vision systems, interlocks, and process monitoring solutions.
- Design and develop assembly fixtures, jigs, gauges, work-holding devices, poka-yoke solutions, and ergonomic tooling to support safe and efficient manufacturing operations.
- Participate in prototype development, validation, and implementation of assembly tooling and fixtures.
- Work closely with suppliers and internal stakeholders to procure, manufacture, install, and commission tooling solutions.
- Ensure tooling designs comply with safety, ergonomics, quality, and Caterpillar manufacturing standards.
- Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action activities to improve safety, quality, and process reliability.
- Drive continuous improvement and waste reduction initiatives using Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Assist in the design, procurement, installation, and commissioning of tooling, fixtures, gauges, and manufacturing equipment.
- Support implementation of low-cost automation and mistake-proofing (Poka-Yoke) solutions.
- Contribute to evaluation of new technologies and preparation of business cases for process improvements.
- Monitor equipment performance and support troubleshooting activities.
- Support factory layout modifications and workstation improvements to enhance safety, productivity, and material flow.
- Assist in capacity analysis, line balancing, and space optimization initiatives.
- Participate in manufacturing process improvement projects aimed at reducing cycle time and improving efficiency.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
- 4 to 6 years of manufacturing engineering or production engineering experience.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, assembly operations, and industrial engineering principles.
- Experience with CAD tools such as CREO and AutoCAD.
- Exposure to Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement methodologies.
- Knowledge of data analysis, root cause analysis, and problem-solving techniques.
- Familiarity with SAP ERP, MES, or manufacturing information systems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, particularly Excel and Power BI.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Exposure to AI-based manufacturing applications, machine vision systems, or digital manufacturing technologies.
- Experience with IoT, Industry 4.0, automation, robotics, or smart factory initiatives.
- Understanding of engine assembly, testing, leak testing, or torque-controlled assembly processes.
- Exposure to APQP, PFMEA, and manufacturing process validation activities.
- Knowledge of low-cost automation and productivity improvement projects.
