To work with the Dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology (SE&T Dean) to plan and oversee the administrative functions of the laboratory, perform testing and other contract work for clients, and supervise student and non-student assistants in carrying out the ITL’s functions.

This is a temporary position through October 31, 2027.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate the day-to-day operational activities of the laboratory.
  • Develop and implement good laboratory practices.
  • Develop and implement good accounting procedures for test sample flow through the laboratory and billing of hours against purchase orders.
  • Perform liaison with users to ensure timely response to needs.
  • Prepare work schedules, assign testing duties, and coordinate training of new student assistants.
  • Order laboratory supplies, plan for new equipment acquisition and monitor budget expenditures.
  • Interview and recommend employment of student assistants.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment in good order.
  • Operate ITL in a manner ensuring cost and revenue targets are reached.
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies to increase the number of ITL customers.
  • Prepare for and attain various lab accreditation/certification requirements as determined by the Dean.
  • Work closely with other on-campus entities to further develop industry and business relationships.
  • Personally perform material property tests and other laboratory work for clients.
  • Work in close conjunction with the faculty and staff of the science and engineering departments to retain students who are trained in a variety of laboratory techniques.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

General supervision is received from the Dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Functional and administrative supervision is exercised over student assistants and the assistant lab supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or related field
  • A demonstrated record of potential for progressive laboratory management.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new software quickly.
  • Experience and ability to positively interact with all members of the campus community.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Reasonable knowledge of university policies and good laboratory practices is desirable.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Duties are generally performed inside but include outside seasonal activities.
  • All work associated with this role must be performed within the state of Michigan.
