Pay Range

$38.20 - $57.30

Major Responsibilities:

  • Operations
    • 1)Develops and implements procedures pertaining to centralized processing and sterilization of reusable medical instrumentation.
    • 2)Establishes methods and work performance standards for handling sterile items and sterilizing equipment in order to comply with the quality assurance requirements; evaluates the adequacy of these procedures and makes revisions as needed.
    • 3)Assures the control of inventory for surgical instrumentation and the organization and storage of products used in the three stages of instrument processing, cleaning/decontamination, assembly and sterilization
    • 4)Manages performance improvement activities to reduce surgical delays due to instrumentation
  • Financial
    • 1)Determines fiscal requirements of department and prepares the budget. Monitors, verifies and reconciles expenditure of budgeted funds. Responsible for budget management and performance and fiscal oversight of all areas of responsibility.
    • 2)Develops annual operating budgets (revenue, expense, activity, and FTEs - budgeted and actual).
    • 3)Develops capital budgets (maintenance and strategic capital).
    • 4)Monitors budgets, investigates and reports on any reasons for variances.
    • 5)Achieves performance within organizational expectations.
    • 6)Ensures that all departmental expenses are processed appropriately, timely, and according to Advocate’s financial control policy and corporate compliance guidelines.
    • 7)Appropriately manages budgeted vs. actual FTEs, open requisitions and profile processing, performance reviews within policy guidelines of 30 days or less.
    • 8)Manage loaner tray program including analysis of cost incurred, trends and recommendations for purchase.
  • Standards/Laws
    • 1)Assures conformance of all sterile processing department personnel to hospital standards, policies, and procedures.
    • 2)Establishes and monitors environmental safety and sanitation controls.
    • 3)Must be aware of existing laws and regulations and implements procedural changes to comply with changes in state rulings, (e.g., Infection Control Standards of Accrediting Organization, Environmental and Safety Requirements of the State, OSHA, etc.).
    • 4)Collaborates with other departmental leaders to ensure understanding of and compliance to standards, policies and procedures related to sterilization and high level disinfection processes performed outside of the sterile processing department
  • Safety/Environmental Accountability
    • 1)Establishes and monitors environmental safety and sanitation controls.
    • 2)Creates and implements performance improvement plans related to PSI infection control outcomes related to instrumentation.
    • 3)Collaborates with departmental leaders to ensure appropriate training on aseptic technique and high level disinfection for departments performing equipment sterilization and high level disinfection processes, e.g. digestive diseases, cancer center, interventional cardiology and radiology, etc.
  • Organizes, implements, maintains the systems necessary for centralized case cart system
    • 2)Coordinates with OR team leadership for preference cards updates and revisions.
    • 1)Manages the process for instrumentation and sterile supplies to be pulled for all surgical procedures.
    • 3)Develops and manages a system for return of sterile, unused supplies according to best practices and industry standards.
  • Employee Development
    • 1)Manages various personnel functions including hiring, performance reviews, salary recommendations, promotions, disciplinary actions, etc.
    • 2)Develops departmental onboarding program requirements in step with departmental and industry changes and ensures ongoing inservice orientation and training for all personnel in Central Processing.
    • 3)Manages and coordinates the establishment of schedules, assignments, and allocation of man-hours and equipment to ensure compliance with departmental commitments.
    • 4)Assures conformance of all department personnel to hospital standards, policies, and procedures.
    • 5)Develops and implements programs for supervisors, staff, and self-growth and development.
    • 6)Reduce associate turnover rates and create performance improvement plans as applicable to department
  • Strategic Planning – Long Range/Short Range Planning
    • 1)provide for improved efficiency, economy of operation, and compliance with the hospital plan for continuing growth.


Education/Experience Required:

  • Bachelors Degree PLUS 5 years sterile processing or equivalent experience Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience 1-2 years of inventory control or budgetary experience.

  • Good customer orientation Basic skills in organization Planning and delegation skills Team building skills Ability to analyze financial reports. Good communication skills Basic PC skills Basic skills in Microsoft Office Suite applications.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Requires 24 hour availability 365 days a year. Completes CEU requirements as per type of certification completed, e.g. twelve (12) CEUs per year for the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) certification or ten (10) CEUs per year for CBSPD certification. Exposure to blood borne pathogens and hazardous materials. Fast-paced environment due to time constraints and deadlines.
