The Mastercard Payment Networks team is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead high-performing teams building scalable and reliable backend systems.
As an Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for driving technical delivery, ensuring engineering excellence, and building strong teams delivering complex distributed systems. This role requires a balance of technical depth, ownership, and strong execution focus.
You will lead teams working on systems that handle high-volume transaction data, provide secure and efficient access to backend services, and operate at global scale.

Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Execution
• Drive architecture and design of scalable, high-performance backend systems
• Guide teams building services using Java, Spring Boot, and REST APIs
• Ensure systems are designed for high throughput, data processing, and reliable data access
• Drive adherence to engineering best practices, design standards, and code quality
• Identify technical risks, dependencies, and system optimisation opportunities

Delivery Ownership & Execution
• Own end-to-end delivery from planning through production deployment
• Ensure strong engineering readiness (requirements, design, dependencies)
• Drive predictable execution with clear milestones and timelines
• Proactively manage risks, blockers, and cross-team dependencies

Operational Excellence
• Ensure systems meet expectations for reliability, scalability, and performance
• Drive adoption of monitoring, observability, and incident management practices
• Support teams in resolving production issues and improving system stability
• Continuously improve engineering processes, tools, and quality standards

People Leadership & Team Development
• Build, mentor, and retain high-performing engineering teams
• Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement
• Provide coaching, feedback, and career development support
• Hire and grow strong engineering talent

Required Skills & Qualifications
• 10+ years of experience in software engineering with leadership experience
• Strong experience delivering distributed, large-scale backend systems
• Hands-on experience with Java, Spring Boot, and REST-based services
• Experience in microservices and event-driven architectures
• Strong understanding of data storage systems (RDBMS / NoSQL) and data access patterns
• Experience with messaging platforms (e.g., Kafka or similar)
• Exposure to large-scale data systems or storage platforms is a strong advantage
• Experience with CI/CD, containerisation, and cloud-native development
• Understanding of system reliability, observability, and performance tuning
• Strong problem-solving and stakeholder management skills
• Experience mentoring engineers and leading teams
