We invite you to join our ~10,000 employees to drive exceptional results for our company, the energy industry and our community.Manager Refinery Public Affairs serves as a strategic Public Affairs resource to refinery leadership and develops and executes strategies to support business objectives, strengthen relationships with key stakeholders, and protect and enhance Valero’s reputation in the communities where it operates. Leads and coordinates local government, community, media, and external communications activities for refineries in the assigned area and supports communications and stakeholder engagement during incidents and emerging issues.At Valero, this role performs duties that support our commitment to advancing the future of energy through innovation, ingenuity, and unmatched execution, including: Serves as a strategic Public Affairs resource to refinery leadership on community, government, media, reputation, and external stakeholder matters.Develops and executes local Public Affairs strategies aligned with refinery and company business objectives.Develops and maintains relationships with local elected officials, government agencies, community leaders, business organizations, civic organizations, and other key stakeholders.Monitors community, government, and external issues that could affect refinery operations or Valero’s reputation and advises refinery and Corporate leadership on appropriate strategies and responses.Coordinates with Corporate Government Affairs on local legislative, regulatory, and public-policy issues affecting refinery operations or business interests.Provides local insight and analysis regarding public officials, candidates, and political issues to support Government Affairs and VALPAC processes, as appropriate.Engages with local government officials on matter affecting refinery operations and business interests.Develops stakeholder engagement strategies for significant refinery projects, operational matters, permitting activities, and other issues with potential community or reputational impact.Serves as an official local company spokesperson and coordinates responses to media and other external inquiries with Corporate Communications.Develops communications strategies, messaging, presentations, talking points, community communications, and other materials for refinery leadership and external audiences.Serves as a key Public Affairs resource during operational incidents and emergencies, coordinating communications and stakeholder outreach with refinery leadership and other appropriate Corporate groups, including Corporate Communications.Participates in emergency preparedness exercises and supports the refinery during incidents, coordinating incident communications with Corporate Communications.Manages involvement in Community Advisory Panels and other community forums and develops strategies to address public questions and concerns.Represents Valero on key boards, chambers of commerce, civic organizations, and industry associations and identifies opportunities for refinery leadership and employees to engage with external stakeholders.Supports strategic community investment, charitable giving, sponsorships, and volunteerism.Identifies opportunities to communicate Valero’s operations, employees, community involvement, and economic contributions and determines appropriate platform ( ie; refinery social media)Builds and maintains relationships with key stakeholders who may be important during operational incidents, significant projects, or emerging community issues.Leads special projects and Public Affairs initiatives as identified by refinery and Corporate leadership.This position is salaried exempt status, which means you are not eligible for overtime pay.
Minimum Requirements:Able and willing to work on-site, in-person at the Valero Corpus Christi Refineries, required. Travel to Three Rivers Refinery required.High School diploma or GED required.10 years of public affairs, community relations, media relations, government affairs, communications, and/or related experience required.Demonstrated experience building relationships with external stakeholders and advising leadership on public affairs or external issues required.Preferred Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Communications, Public Affairs, Political Science, Journalism, Business, or related field preferred.Experience in the energy, refining, manufacturing, petrochemical, or other industrial sector preferred.Experience working directly with facility or operations leadership preferred.Experience with media relations, issues management, incident/crisis communications, and stakeholder engagement preferred.Experience engaging elected officials, community leaders, and other external stakeholders preferred.Knowledge of Incident Command System principles and experience supporting emergency response communications preferred.Need more reasons to work for a company that is both professionally challenging and culturally rewarding?
