Responsible for initiating and facilitating the implementation of teaming, plant modernization, continuous improvement, and Certified Assembly Manufacturing (CAM) activities at the shop floor level. Incumbents might be assigned second and third-shift operations with limited immediate direction.
The Supervisor Production Level Ill directs and organizes the activities of one (1) to five (5) Salaried employees and ten (10) to fifty (50) Hourly employees to assure that production, engineering, and quality requirements are met within utilization, efficiency, cost and schedule.
Manufacturing activities are diverse in nature and level of difficulty and may include production, testing, and/or overhaul activities. Incumbent provides close daily guidance and expertise to the supervision of operations involving the machining, fabrication, and/or assembly of experimental, developmental, prototype, or limited production components or tooling, as well as standard products. This position may also act in a lead-supervisor capacity over operations utilizing large numbers of production employees or, highly automated, computer-assisted machining or testing facilities and processes. The Incumbent may direct second or third-shift operations and coordinate carryover and prioritization efforts between shifts. The Incumbent is responsible for providing online production and manufacturing engineering expertise, scheduling assistance, and technical guidance or direction to supervisors and Hourly employees.
The incumbent operates in a dynamic environment that requires independent judgment and technical problem-solving, as well as ongoing planning, prioritization, coordination, and follow-up to maintain established schedules and capacity utilization. Factors influencing this process are the requirements to establish and monitor production and testing schedules, as well as interpret changing product definitions or customer requirements. Incumbent must provide expeditious technical guidance to supervision and Hourly personnel for timely resolution of production, testing, or product performance problems and act as key liaison with Project Management, Design Engineering, Quality Engineering, and other support organizations. Conditions impacting this position on a daily basis are human relations Issues, material shortages and delays, unanticipated machine or facility downtime and short lead time schedule, design or configuration changes, and frequent requirements to exercise independent technical or engineering problem-solving where significant impact to unit goals as well as Company master schedules and customer commitments may result.
Hourly employees receiving direction from incumbent are varied production, test, Inspection, quality, maintenance, and tooling classifications. Typically more than one (1) functional group operating at complex levels of difficulty may be directly or indirectly supervised by the incumbent, Including highly technical or automated operations.
The primary function of the incumbent is to act as an online resource for the timely resolution of unprecedented or undocumented technical or engineering problems related to manufacturing operations. Incumbent provides direction to one or more area(s) or function(s) such as machining, fabrication, and assembly of detail components and sub-assemblies; production of research and development components, assemblies, prototype hardware, and tooling; base manufacture and related structures fabrication; electrical assembly Including engine simulation functional test and final systems checks; custom enclosure assembly and related electrical, fire and gas systems and functional test; test cell operations and product final acceptance; rework, retest of rejected turbomachinery units and ancillary equipment; overhaul and remanufacture of turbomachinery. Incumbent provides daily technical expertise and direction, establishes priorities and schedules for Production, and develops staffing and expense proposals for assigned areas, as well as auditing and approving departmental expenditures within established levels. Incumbent coordinates and prepares reports and documentation such as departmental Instruction; quality control, part rejection, daily activity, and failure analysis reports; and other special reports, as required.
A principal challenge for this position is the requirement to effectively resolve complex technical and engineering problems which directly impact master schedule and customer commitments. Interpersonal and human relations issues in an environment of stringent time and performance constraints require the incumbent to establish effective rapport and communication with individual Hourly employees and supervisors; and with technical and engineering support personnel in other functions and plant locations. The incumbent provides daily guidance and direction to Salaried and Hourly personnel to assure that Human Resources practices and decisions in the incumbent's area are within Company policy.
A significant departure from established production, testing, and overhaul procedures or developmental/experimental guidelines by the incumbent requires review and approval by Unit Manager. External customer, vendor, government, or regulatory agency contacts require close coordination with and involvement of cognizant project management.
Incumbent maintains a close daily interface with all support functions to assure that needed materials, services, and technical guidance are provided. The incumbent identifies design and engineering deficiencies, or improper production and test procedures or instructions, and resolves or communicates the same to engineering personnel with recommendations for resolutions.
Extensive knowledge of product knowledge and experience in the area of planning, organizing, and providing technical leadership to supervision and Hourly employees engaged in production, test, overhaul, or developmental manufacturing activities is required.
