Job Description

WELLTOWER – REIMAGINE REAL ESTATE WITH US

At Welltower, we’re transforming how the world thinks about senior living and wellness-focused real estate. As a global leader in residential wellness and healthcare infrastructure, we create vibrant, purpose-driven communities where housing, healthcare, and hospitality converge. Our culture is fast-paced, collaborative, and endlessly ambitious—guided by our mantra: The only easy day was yesterday.

We’re looking for bold, independent thinkers who thrive on challenge, embrace complexity, and are driven to deliver long-term value. Every team member is empowered to think like an owner, innovate fearlessly, and lead from where they stand. If you're passionate about outcomes and inspired by the opportunity to shape the future of healthcare infrastructure, we want you on our best-in-class team.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Welltower is seeking a Manager, Payroll & Benefits Accounting, to join our growing accounting organization. This newly created role will support the continued expansion of the business and increasing complexity of payroll and benefits accounting across Welltower’s global operations.

The Manager will be responsible for overseeing the accounting and financial reporting associated with payroll, employee benefits, short-term incentive compensation (STI), and travel and expense (T&E). This individual will serve as a key accounting partner to Human Capital, Payroll, Finance, and IT and will play an important role in Welltower’s Workday implementation.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting knowledge, experience supporting payroll and benefits in a complex or global organization, and a process-improvement mindset. This role will have the opportunity to help build and develop a dedicated payroll and benefits accounting function, establish scalable processes, and identify opportunities for automation as the organization continues to grow.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the accounting and financial reporting processes for payroll, employee benefits, incentive compensation, and T&E across Welltower’s operations.
  • Oversee payroll-related journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and balance sheet accounts, ensuring completeness and accuracy across multiple countries and entities.
  • Partner closely with Payroll, Human Capital, Finance, IT, and other stakeholders to ensure payroll and benefit activity is appropriately reflected in the general ledger.
  • Serve as a key accounting stakeholder in the implementation of Workday, helping define accounting requirements, validate system configurations, support testing, and ensure effective integration with financial systems.
  • Evaluate current payroll and benefits of accounting processes and identify opportunities to streamline, standardize, and automate workflows.
  • Develop scalable processes and controls capable of supporting continued employee and business growth across Welltower's global platform.
  • Research and resolve complex payroll and benefits of accounting issues, including differences across countries, legal entities, compensation programs, and benefit structures.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate internal controls, documentation, and reconciliation procedures related to payroll and benefits of accounting.
  • Manage and develop team members responsible for payroll-related accounting activities while establishing clear roles, responsibilities, and processes for the function.
  • Partner with internal and external audit teams and provide documentation and support related to payroll, benefits, and other employee-related expenses.
  • Monitor payroll and benefit expense trends and investigate unusual activity or variances as appropriate.
  • Following completion of key system implementations, evaluate opportunities to expand the team's responsibilities to additional Human Capital accounting areas, potentially including stock-based compensation, severance, and other employee-related programs.
  • Support special projects and other accounting initiatives as the organization continues to grow and evolve.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA or other relevant professional designation preferred.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including meaningful experience with payroll, benefits, compensation, or other employee-related accounting.
  • Experience supporting payroll accounting within a large, complex, multi-entity organization strongly preferred.
  • Global or multi-country payroll accounting experience is strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP, general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, accruals, and internal controls.
  • Experience with ERP, payroll, or HRIS implementations; Workday experience is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve, automate, and scale accounting processes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work through complex accounting and data issues.
  • Experience leading, developing, or overseeing accounting team members.
  • Ability to partner effectively across Accounting, Human Capital, Payroll, IT, Finance, and other functions.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

The successful candidate will build a scalable and well-controlled payroll and benefits accounting function that supports Welltower’s continued growth. This individual will improve the accuracy, efficiency, and automation of employee-related accounting while serving as a key partner during the Workday implementation and helping position the team to take on additional Human Capital accounting responsibilities over time.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check, drug screening, and verification of employment, education, and other credentials relevant to the position.
