Summary:
The Payroll Manager is responsible for leading all payroll operations for a manufacturing organization with a large population of hourly and salaried employees. This role ensures accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing while managing payroll systems, timekeeping processes, tax compliance, audits, and payroll staff. The Payroll Manager partners closely with Human Resources, Finance, and Operations to support a multi-shift manufacturing workforce and drive continuous process improvement.
Responsibilities:
- Manage end-to-end payroll processing for hourly and salaried employees across multiple locations, shifts, and departments.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local payroll regulations, including FLSA requirements, wage and hour laws, garnishments, and tax reporting.
- Oversee weekly, bi-weekly, and semi-monthly payroll cycles as applicable.
- Manage timekeeping and attendance systems to ensure accurate recording of employee hours, overtime, shift differentials, and paid time off.
- Review and approve payroll changes including new hires, promotions, transfers, terminations, pay adjustments, bonuses, and benefit deductions.
- Lead payroll audits and reconciliations to ensure payroll accuracy and compliance.
- Administer payroll tax filings and ensure timely submission of required reports and payments.
- Partner with HR to maintain accurate employee records and support employee relations matters related to compensation and payroll.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for payroll inquiries and issue resolution.
- Develop and maintain payroll procedures, internal controls, and process documentation.
- Analyze payroll metrics and prepare reports for Finance, HR, and executive leadership.
- Support annual processes including W-2 preparation, audits, benefit enrollments, and compensation reviews.
- Manage payroll vendors and maintain payroll and timekeeping systems.
- Identify opportunities for automation, efficiency improvements, and process standardization.
- Supervise and develop payroll staff, providing coaching, training, and performance management.
QualificationsEducation
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
Experience
- 7+ years of payroll experience, including payroll administration for both hourly and salaried employees.
- 3+ years of leadership or supervisory experience.
- Manufacturing, industrial, distribution, or multi-site operations experience strongly preferred.
- Experience managing high-volume payroll and complex timekeeping environments.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of payroll regulations, FLSA requirements, wage and hour laws, and payroll tax administration.
- Experience with payroll and timekeeping systems such as ADP, UKG/Kronos, Workday, SAP, or Paycom.
- Advanced Excel and reporting skills.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong communication and employee service orientation.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
- CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) certification preferred.
