Job Description

The Manager has direct responsibility for the management and supervision of the Division of Pathology.

Core Competencies

  • Supervises the human resource management functions of the department inclusive of interviewing, hiring, orienting, payroll management, staffing, scheduling, performance evaluations, coaching and disciplinary action (when indicated).
  • Develops and maintains staffing levels to meet the needs of the Pathologists, department and budgetary constraints.
  • Functions as a key point person in implementation of new procedures workflows, equipment as needed.
  • Ensures orientation and training of clinical and clerical staff to department, job and safe use of equipment.
  • Communicates performance standards and expectations clearly to staff; assists staff in setting goals and meeting standards.
  • Provides effective performance appraisals, including the establishment of achievable goals and objectives, to direct reports.
  • Facilitates staff meetings; leads open discussion of work-related issues; and encourages the exchange of ideas for improvement.
  • Mediates staff conflicts and problems.
  • Keeps procedure manuals current according to regulatory requirements.
  • Provides input and makes recommendations for the department budget, and when approved, controls personnel and expenses accordingly.
  • Demonstrates an active problem solving attitude & positive approach to all aspects of job

  • Evaluates and coordinates equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Oversees department billing related matters.
  • Leads change by promoting and using lean methodologies as a framework for the application of safety and high reliability science and the continuous improvement model.
  • Participates in hospital performance improvement activities (kaizens, lean initiatives) when appropriate.
  • Performs routine and complex histochemical and/or immunohistochemistry procedures according to established policies and procedures.
  • Performs validation of new antibodies and tests. Stores documents and slides for future reference appropriately.
  • Participates in daily Histology functions including but not limited to: embedding tissue sample, cutting paraffin and frozen sections, staining and coversliping tissue section.
  • Ensures that the quality control program is appropriate for testing performed. This includes establishing parameters for acceptable levels of analytic performance and ensuring that these levels are maintained throughout the entire testing process
  • Performs preventative maintenance on equipment, documents PM appropriately, makes minor repairs and immediately contacts appropriate personnel for problems requiring repairs that are more complex. Follows-up to ensure repairs are completed.
  • Assists in problem troubleshooting. Recognizes basic problems in test methodology, quality control and instrument functions.
  • Identifies training needs and assures that each individual performing tests receives appropriate training and education for the type and complexity of the laboratory services performed.
  • Provides input and makes recommendations for the department budget, and when approved, controls personnel and expenses accordingly.
