Job Description

The Manager of Transportation Compliance is responsible for leading and overseeing all aspects of U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and related regulatory compliance across the organization. This managerial role ensures that the company operates safely, efficiently, and in full adherence to all applicable federal, state, and local transportation laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and lead a comprehensive DOT compliance strategy aligned with corporate goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee audits, inspections, and investigations conducted by federal and state agencies; ensure timely response and resolution.
  • Maintain current knowledge of DOT/FMCSA rules, including Hours of Service (HOS), driver qualification, vehicle maintenance, ELD compliance, and safety reporting (e.g., CSA scores).
  • Direct company-wide safety programs, driver training, and ongoing compliance education.
  • Oversee and manage a team of compliance coordinators.
  • Analyze compliance data and metrics to identify risks, trends, and areas for improvement; present findings to executive leadership.
  • Ensure the accurate maintenance of driver qualification files, vehicle records, and logs per DOT standards.
  • Partner with Legal, HR, Operations, and Fleet departments to develop cross-functional compliance policies and risk mitigation plans.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with vendors and consultants who assist in overall compliance of the fleet and drivers.
  • Ensure all applicable roadside inspection reports are reviewed, processed, and submitted to the appropriate state agencies with required regulatory time frames.
  • Ensure all company’s DOT covered drivers are selected for and complete random drug screen and alcohol testing in accordance with applicable DOT regulations and company policy.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Transportation, Logistics, Business, Legal Studies, or a related field (Master’s degree or JD a plus).
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in transportation compliance and transportation safety management, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership or executive role.
  • Extensive knowledge of FMCSA regulations, CSA, IFTA, IRP, HAZMAT, and other relevant compliance areas.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Proven leadership and team management abilities in a fast-paced regulatory environment.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills; capable of interacting with regulators, executives, drivers, and operations staff.
  • Ability to manage complex compliance systems and software (e.g., Samsara, Tenstreet, WorkForce QA, etc.).
  • Detail-oriented with a strategic mindset.

Preferred Certifications:

  • Certified Director of Safety (CDS) – National Safety Council
  • Transportation Professional Certification (e.g., NATMI)
  • OSHA 30-Hour Certification

Work Environment:

  • Office-based with regular visits to field operations, depots and terminals.
  • Occasional travel (10-25%) may be required for audits, inspections, and site visits.
