The Manager of Reference & Transfusion (MRT) is responsible for participating in and directing all activities within Reference & Transfusion (R&T) Services, ensuring that daily operations in the R&T laboratories adhere to all established guidelines, deliver excellent service, and meet the needs of all departmental customers. This includes overseeing the overall operations and services associated with assigned departmental duties, ensuring work is performed within the appropriate scope of complexity as defined by accrediting agencies. The MRT helps maintain compliance with regulatory and accrediting standards through established policies, processes, protocols, and procedures, and participates in the education and training of students and employees, including maintaining training and competency evaluation programs. Additionally, the MRT is involved in critical document review and approval processes, error management, and process improvement initiatives, while also providing leadership in department scheduling, counseling and resolution, technical guidance, goal setting, and performance evaluations. This position further includes participation in vendor and supplier qualification processes.

To support ongoing development and organizational goals, the MRT is required to attend meetings and training sessions, as assigned. Periodic travel between assigned work areas to support other locations/projects at other CBC service areas may be required.
Exempt employees are expected to maintain availability beyond standard business hours when business needs arise. Regular full-time attendance is required during normal working hours.
QualificationsEDUCATION
Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral Degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemical, Physical or Biological Science from an accredited institution, as outlined in 42 CFR 493.1489(b)
Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Board Certification: MLS(ASCP), BB(ASCP), MLS(AMT), or equivalent Board Certification and participates in the CME program, if applicable and required by accrediting agency
Specialist in Blood Banking, SBB(ASCP) Board Certification, preferred
EXPERIENCE
Minimum of 7 years of immunohematology laboratory experience
Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience
Minimum of 2 years of molecular testing experience, preferred
Minimum of 1 year of flow cytometry and/or HLA experience, preferred
Minimum of 4 years of immunohematology reference laboratory experience, preferred
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Ability to maintain extensive working knowledge of blood bank policies and procedures
Ability to utilize detailed problem-solving skills; Ability to provide instruction to customers based on the problems presented and provide options for corrective action, and proper documentation of the problem and resolution
Ability to concentrate, understand complex problems and to collaborate and explore alternative solutions; Ability to organize thoughts and ideas into understandable terminology
Ability to understand, remember, communicate and apply verbal and/or written instructions or other information; Ability to understand and follow basic instructions and guidelines
Ability to perform and utilize extensive mathematics, including familiarity with laboratory mathematics and computers; Ability to compute, analyze and interpret numerical data for reporting purposes
Ability to utilize effective organizational skills, prioritize workload, pay attention to detail and show consistent follow-through
Ability to communicate, hear and speak effectively on the phone and to use a computer or other electronic device
Ability to communicate and interact effectively with others (e.g., internal/external clients, co-workers) in a clear, understandable, and professional manner (e.g., verbal, written), and possess comprehensive reading skills
Ability to effectively communicate verbally, conveying information clearly, accurately, and in a timely manner to a variety of audiences
Ability to make decisions which have a significant impact on the department’s credibility, operations and services
Ability to provide exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills, building effective relationships with internal and external customers while fostering openness, trust, and collaboration
Maintains a clear understanding of applicable accreditation and regulatory agency requirements
