General Accountability

Responsible for planning, development, integration and implementation of media relations communication strategies and tactics for SGI, SGI CANADA and its regional operations. This role is the primary SGI media contact and spokesperson for all proactive and reactive media relations, provides guidance and advice to management and the Minister’s Office on issues management and crisis communications from a media relations perspective, and builds and maintains relationships with local, national and insurance industry media. Manages brand identity in area of responsibility.

Key Accountabilities

Communications Oversight – Media Relations (40%)

  • Manages responses to media calls and other inquiries, and prepares the appropriate spokesperson (i.e. this position, Minister, SGI executive or corporate subject matter experts) to handle media inquiries via the development of key messages, question and answer documents, and other briefing material.

  • Manages the research of information to craft key messages, news releases, question and answer documents, speaking notes, materials for announcements and events, and other communication materials that enhance the media’s understanding of SGI, SGI CANADA, traffic safety and the insurance industry.

  • Manages the organization of media conferences, photo/video opportunities, and media events.

  • Manages the planning, development and execution of media relations strategies that are part of overall communication strategies and provides senior-level expertise and counsel to support these strategies.

  • Develops, manages, implements and measures media relations to heighten awareness and increase understanding of SGI’s business and mandate with the media and general public.

  • Develops and maintains relationships with local, national and insurance industry media.

  • Liaises with Executive Council, the Minister’s Office, Crown Investments Corporation, as well as contacts in other government ministries and agencies, and other external partners and stakeholder groups on strategic communications issues and opportunities.

Corporate social media oversight (20%)

  • Develops, manages, implements and measures content for the SGI social media channels.

  • Ensures alignment of social media content with SGI’s media relations efforts, other public relations efforts and overall brand.

  • Manages customer service and responses delivered via social media channels ensuring corporate standards are upheld.

Issues Management/Crisis Communications (10%)

  • Provides guidance and advice to senior leadership and the Minister’s Office for the media relations component of issues management and crisis communications.

  • Develops messaging and implements strategy tactics to respond to issues management and crisis communications situations.

Brand Strategy (10%)

  • Implements and integrates brand strategy as it relates to area of responsibility.

  • Implements and ensures adherence to brand identity, including adherence to visual identity, digital standards, corporate voice and corporate writing style guidelines.

People Leadership (10%)

  • Builds a high performing workforce by actively leading human resource activities.

  • Ensures development of divisional succession plans.

  • Builds a culture of leadership and accountability to effectively deliver on strategic and corporate strategies, ensuring integration with employee performance development and career development plans.

  • Drives performance through team members and is committed to leadership. development across the company, supporting employees and workforce readiness through mentoring, training and developmental opportunities.

Corporate Management (10%)

  • Ensures programs and policies are in alignment with corporate, strategic and divisional strategies.

  • Manages risk in area of authority.

  • Ensures that the Health, Safety and Emergency Management Policy is applied in area of responsibility, including development, implementation and managing of program components specific to departmental health and safety requirements.

  • Makes decisions for departmental operations that are efficient, effective and in alignment with strategic direction and priorities.

  • Ensures department and program policies, procedures and guidelines comply with applicable federal and provincial legislation and regulations; implements and evaluates changes to legislation and regulations in area of authority.

  • Establishes and maintains an effective system of internal controls to support reliable financial reporting and compliance in accordance with applicable laws and regulations within the span of control, and communicates the importance of internal controls to staff.

Education and Experience

  • A four-year degree from an accredited post-secondary education institution in Communication Studies, Journalism, English or a related field.

  • Eight years’ experience comprised of four years leadership experience with progressively challenging responsibility and four years’ experience in communications or public relations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of developing media relations and/or public relations strategies.

  • Knowledge and understanding of traditional and new/social and evolving media.

  • Knowledge of local, national and/or insurance industry media.

  • Knowledge of corporate and strategic communication policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of the insurance industry.

  • Knowledge of organizational units, and how they interact to support the corporation’s operations.

  • Knowledge of how financial information contributes to management understanding and decisions.

  • Knowledge of project management methodologies and techniques required to plan, manage and execute projects.

  • Ability to communicate to influence and persuade, adapting to specific audiences (both written and verbal).

  • Skill in providing a customer-centric approach to communications, boiling down complex concepts into simple language that is easily understood (written and verbal).

  • Ability to identify issues that require communication intervention (issues management – proactive and reactive).

Mental Stress: YES - Crisis communications and issues management are often accompanied by stress. Communications is often in the thick of the action/stress at times of crisis, because we are in charge of the messaging and communications tactics and providing communications guidance to senior leaders. Dealing with hostile customers/commenters on social media channels can also be challenging, especially if SGI is viewed as being involved in a controversial issue or announcement (for example, a rate increase). The frequency of the mental stress is estimated at 10%.
