Job Description

Our Internal Audit Group (IAG) is a global function with more than 300 team members and offices across nine countries within American Express. Our mission is to protect and enhance organizational value by providing independent, objective, risk-based assurance and advisory services, while influencing the way the company manages risk.

We are committed to significantly growing our audit team as we continue to expand and enhance the Internal Audit Group. Our assurance and risk professionals bring diverse backgrounds, including internal controls, consumer compliance, technology, operational risk, financial accounting, data analytics, and banking operations. Our audit teams are aligned to key risk areas and business units, enabling IAG to provide comprehensive, risk-based audit coverage.

In addition, IAG has a Professional Practices group responsible for managing audit operations, quality, and standards; regulatory relations; reporting; training and professional development; and key internal capabilities and technologies.

We are looking for an Internal Audit Manager to join our team and lead end-to-end audit engagements, partnering with stakeholders to assess risks, evaluate controls, deliver high-quality audit outcomes, and help strengthen the company's control environment.

  • Serve as Auditor in Charge (AIC) on low-risk audits, managing audit engagements end-to-end by planning audit projects, defining objectives and scope, and coordinating with control groups, external auditors, stakeholders, and regulators to ensure effective execution; conduct Level 1 (L1) reviews and serve as the primary audit client contact.
  • Analyze and review audit results and documentation to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of controls, synthesizing audit findings into clear, actionable insights.
  • Lead audit client meetings and walkthroughs.
  • Develop audit test steps, findings, and reports in accordance with IAG policies and procedures.
  • Guide the team in validating and executing corrective actions and Management Action Plans (MAPs) to ensure they are impactful, sustainable, and strengthen the business unit's control environment.
  • Support business monitoring activities in partnership with audit leadership by tracking key metrics to identify control issues and trends; stay current on evolving industry trends, external developments, and regulatory changes, and assess their impact on the business.
  • Delegate tasks to team members; guide auditors in assessing risks, evaluating control design, and executing audit testing; review work papers and provide constructive feedback.
  • Effectively coach, teach, mentor, and develop less experienced colleagues and co-sourced resources across geographically diverse locations in all aspects of their roles, the audit and analytics lifecycle, audit methodology, and best practices.
  • Conduct post-audit feedback discussions with audit team members to provide actionable feedback, support professional development, and recognize accomplishments.
  • Guide the team to proactively and consistently communicate task status, roadblocks, and challenges, while encouraging the identification and discussion of potential solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience in internal audit, with a strong understanding of risk-based auditing principles and practices.
  • Prior experience within the Big 4 consulting firms and/or banks preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce high-quality deliverables and provide clear, actionable recommendations to management on control issues, opportunities for improvement, and remediation strategies.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop teams in a fast-paced environment, effectively managing competing priorities while applying strong project management and problem-solving skills to deliver business results.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills, with the ability to break down complex problems, leverage data and risk insights, and draw well-reasoned, risk-based conclusions.
  • Solid understanding of control theory and professional auditing standards, with the ability to apply them throughout the audit lifecycle.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations, regulatory risk, accounting principles, and financial services industry practices, including emerging technologies and data-related considerations, and the ability to incorporate these into audit planning and execution.
  • Experience using data analytics and visualization tools, key risk indicators (KRIs), key performance indicators (KPIs), information systems, and dashboards to support audit activities and identify meaningful insights.
  • Demonstrated interest in leveraging data and analytics to inform decision-making, interpret results, and enhance audit effectiveness.
