Job Description

J.D. Irving, Limited is seeking an experienced and strategic Manager, Internal Audit to lead and enhance our internal audit function. Reporting to the Director, Internal Audit, this role is responsible for developing and executing a risk-based internal audit plan, providing independent and objective assurance, and adding value by improving the effectiveness of risk management, controls, and governance processes across the organization.

The successful candidate will bring strong audit leadership, sound business judgment, and the ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders across diverse business units.

  • Lead end to end internal audit engagements across multiple J.D. Irving business units, including planning, scoping, fieldwork, reporting, and follow up, ensuring audits are risk focused and aligned with organizational priorities and management expectations.
  • Support the Director Internal Audit to develop, maintain, and execute the annual risk based Internal Audit Plan, incorporating enterprise risks, management input, prior audit results and emerging risk areas.
  • Oversee the Financial Governance Assessment program, including control question design, quarterly testing coordination, results analysis, reporting to divisional leadership.
  • Evaluate the design and operating effectiveness of internal controls, governance practices, and risk management processes across financial, operational, IT, and compliance areas, and assess alignment with policies, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
  • Work with the auditors to ensure that audit report detail is clear, practical, and decision useful, translating complex issues into concise findings and prioritized recommendations for management and senior leadership.
  • Actively manage audit issue tracking and remediation, including validating management action plans, monitoring implementation status, following up on overdue items, and escalating risks or delays where appropriate.
  • Lead, coach, and develop internal audit team members, including assigning work, reviewing deliverables, providing technical guidance, supporting professional development, and contributing to performance feedback and talent decisions.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and other assurance providers, managing audit coverage, sharing relevant results, reducing duplication of effort, and supporting reliance where appropriate.
  • Provide advisory and risk management support to the business, identifying opportunities for process improvement, efficiency gains, cost savings, and risk mitigation through audit work, analytics, and management requests.
  • Lead and support special projects and investigations, including targeted reviews, management requests, expense and travel reviews, ad hoc risk assessments, and sensitive matters involving potential control breaches or misuse.
  • Own and continuously improve audit tools and documentation, including oversight of the Diligent One Platform, audit methodologies, templates, governance documentation, and team user guidance.
  • Stay current on professional standards, regulatory requirements, and emerging risks, applying relevant changes to audit planning, execution, and reporting practices.
  • Build strong working relationships with divisional leaders and corporate functions, balancing independent assurance with a practical, business focused approach.
  • Support continuous improvement of the Internal Audit function, including process efficiency, use of data and analytics, and enhancement of reporting and stakeholder communication.

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA) required; CIA or other relevant certification considered an asset
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in internal audit, external audit, or risk management
  • Proven experience leading audit teams and managing multiple priorities
  • Strong knowledge of internal control frameworks (e.g., COSO) and risk-based audit methodologies
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and report-writing skills
  • Ability to build strong relationships and influence at all levels of the organization
  • High standards of integrity, objectivity, and professionalism
