About the role:

The Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) Manager manages and coordinates all safety, health, and environment programs, processes, and activities to maintain a compliant and safe work environment. This role drives excellence in safety, health, and environment across the site to achieve the best safety and sustainability results. The SHE Manager will develop the local strategy to deliver legal compliance and ensure execution of BC Standards. This role will ensure the development and implementation of programs to drive the reduction of safety incidents and environmentally harmful impacts. The SHE Manager leads and manages SHE-related incidents on site. This role provides guidance and support on relevant SHE matters. The SHE Manager is a member of the Plant Leadership Team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designs, builds from scratch, maintains, and leads the implementation of the local safety and environmental management systems.
  • Conducts a full gap assessment to identify missing processes and develops action plans to close those gaps.
  • Leads SHE incident management and drives management of relevant programs and actions relating to documented risks and/or incident follow-up.
  • Conducts SHE meetings, audits, and inspections to ensure compliance, evaluate performance, identify corrective and preventive actions, and implement follow-up assessments.
  • Provides site employees, contractors, and visitors with guidance on health and safety and confirms the site complies with Barry Callebaut, industry, local, state/provincial, and national guidelines and regulations.
  • Collaborates with management to develop and maintain an Emergency Response Plan and serves as the primary contact for site SHE incident notification, investigation, and case management.
  • Integrates occupational health and safety imperatives with business decision-making and risk management.
  • Advises on engineering and maintenance practices to improve safe systems of work.
  • Drives a positive SHE culture by embedding the 10 BC Life Saving Principles, leading Gemba safety talks, training teams, and modeling safety-first leadership behaviors.
  • Ensures compliance is regularly audited and performance assessed, using results to drive continuous improvement.
  • Responsible for monitoring and measurement of SHE KPIs and targets (SHE Scorecard).
  • Develops effective follow-up plans, workflow structures, and development plans for the SHE function and the wider workforce.
  • Leads training and coaching initiatives to build a strong safety culture across all levels of the plant.

About you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering in fields such as Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety, Environmental Engineering, Public Health, or related technical areas.
  • 7+ years of strong, hands-on EHS/SHE experience, ideally in manufacturing (required).
  • Knowledge and experience complying with OSHA 29 CFR 1910, environmental regulations (air, water, waste, stormwater), DOT hazardous materials, Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry safety standards, NFPA dust explosion prevention, and understanding FDA regulations.
  • Experience supporting 24/7 plant operations.
  • Understanding of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the proven ability to coach people and drive cultural change across all levels of the plant.
  • Demonstrated sense of urgency and ownership.
  • Project Management skills.
  • Experience leading meetings and giving presentations to plant leadership and cross‑functional teams.
  • Understanding of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is a plus.
  • Internal auditor or ISO auditor qualification is a plus.
  • Experience with Lean/TPM tools and ways of working is a plus.
