Job Description

What's the role?

You'll play a central role in how Westpac understands and manages its Group cost base. Sitting within Group Finance, you'll deliver clear, driver-based insights on expense performance across forecasts, targets and peer benchmarks, helping shape Executive and Board decision-making.

Partnering closely with divisional, functional and line-of-business finance teams, you'll turn complex expense data into concise, actionable insight. You'll explain cost movements, challenge assumptions, support planning and target setting, and provide forward-looking scenario analysis to improve decision-making.

This is a high-impact individual contributor role with broad stakeholder exposure across Group Finance. You'll also simplify and automate reporting processes, strengthen controls across data and models, and create capacity for deeper analytics and higher-value insight.

This is a permanent, full-time opportunity, based in Sydney with flexible hybrid working.

What will I be doing?

  • Provide driver-based analysis of Group expense performance across the cost base, cost growth and key expense categories, against forecasts, targets and peer benchmarks.
  • Deliver clear variance analysis, commentary and forward-looking insights for senior Finance stakeholders.
  • Support Executive and Board materials through robust modelling, sensitivity analysis and scenario planning.
  • Partner with divisional, functional and line-of-business finance teams to improve the quality of expense insights and business decision-making.
  • Maintain strong controls across data, models and reporting outputs, including reconciliations, review checks and documentation.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify, standardise and automate reporting to improve speed, quality and impact.

What do I need?

This role is suited to candidates with early‑stage experience in FP&A, performance, or expense analytics within banking or financial services. We are seeking candidates ready to step up and grow their capability in FP&A, performance, or expense analytics within banking or financial services. You will have:

  • Foundational understanding of planning, forecasting, and performance reporting cycles, with a proactive and learning mindset.
  • Strong Excel capability, with exposure to TM1 or a similar enterprise planning or general ledger platform.
  • Developing financial modelling, variance analysis, and scenario planning skills.
  • Ability to interpret financial data and communicate clear, actionable insights to stakeholders.
  • High attention to detail, with a sound control mindset and emerging commercial judgement.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the confidence to present insights clearly.
  • Experience with BI and reporting tools, and comfort working with large data sets.
  • CA / CPA qualification (or currently working towards) is desirable.
