Job Description

In coordination with the Senior Vice President for Global Government Affairs and Community Engagement and the Director of Government Affairs, the Government Affairs Manager implements advocacy strategies to advance policy positions at the state and federal level by working closely with internal stakeholders to ensure recommendations align to deliver on Sherwin-Williams’ corporate priorities.

This role will report to 505 9th Street, NW #830 Washington, DC.

Job duties include contact with other employees and access confidential and proprietary information and/or other items of value, and such access may be supervised or unsupervised. The Company therefore has determined that a review of criminal history is necessary to protect the business and its operations and reputation and is necessary to protect the safety of the Company’s staff, employees, and business relationships.

This position is also eligible for bonus based on performance and subject to the terms of the Company’s applicable plans.

  • Represent Sherwin-Williams before the U.S. federal government as well as targeted state/local governments.
  • Maintain an understanding of the policy and regulatory landscape of key issues to Sherwin-Williams.
  • Monitor political developments that may impact the business or how Government Affairs engages on priority issues.
  • Track and analyze legislative and regulatory policy developments, providing intelligence and insights.
  • Assists in the development of communications to support government affairs strategies, including internal and external communications, position papers, and issue briefings.
  • Support and further establish a political network on issue areas of importance to Sherwin-Williams with key elected officials, their staff and committees of jurisdiction, relevant agencies, and trade associations.
  • Participates in U.S. trade association and coalition activities.
  • Helps to support and engage U.S. government relations consultants based on direction by senior government affairs team leaders.
  • You will be required to register as a lobbyist.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (from an accredited institution, college or university)
  • 5-7 years of government affairs, regulatory affairs, and/or public policy experience
  • Government or government relations expertise with US Congress and US federal agencies
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain relationships with policymakers in a bipartisan and bicameral manner, as well as industry stakeholders and other partners
  • Proactive, strategic thinker, strong work ethic, sound judgment, diplomacy, and ethics.
  • Solution-oriented, flexible, and collaborative
  • Ability to effectively deliver information, and explain, advocate, and negotiate positions and issues to a broad spectrum of individuals
  • Ability to quickly learn and evaluate issues as they arise
  • Issue interest in environment, chemical management, trade, and sustainability
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future for employment visa status
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Economics, or related field preferred
  • 7+ years of government affairs, regulatory affairs, and/or public policy experience
  • Experience with state/local government preferred

  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to learn legislative and regulatory tracking software
