Job Description

As Manager of Fluid Systems Engineering, you will lead the team responsible for the fluid systems of SEALER, Blykalla’s lead-cooled small modular reactor (SMR) – from the molten lead in the reactor pool to the steam powering the turbine.

This is a key engineering leadership role with a broad plant-level perspective. Your team owns the functional and system engineering of the primary and secondary fluid systems, bringing together thermodynamics, thermohydraulics and system engineering to ensure they perform as one integrated plant.

You will lead and develop a growing team of fluid system engineers, set the technical direction and priorities for the department, and work closely with engineering teams and industrial partners to turn the reactor design into robust, buildable solutions.

The role combines technical and people leadership, giving you the opportunity to shape both the engineering and the team behind some of the most critical systems in Blykalla’s nuclear power plant.

What you'll get to do

• Lead and grow a team of approximately 15 system engineers, with clear end-to-end system ownership.
• Own the department's design intent across the fluid systems scope, from primary lead systems and reactor auxiliaries to steam generators, coolant pumps, secondary systems, and conventional island interfaces.
• Set technical priorities across the portfolio, balancing Blykalla-specific engineering with proven industrial solutions.
• Drive requirements-based systems engineering, with clear design basis documentation, traceable requirements, and trade-off studies guiding key design decisions.
• Own the plant's thermodynamic and thermohydraulic backbone, including system performance, heat balance, and technical inputs to LCOE and energy system models.
• Manage the department's key industrial partnerships (steam generator, primary coolant pump, intermediate loop and condenser cooling, turbine island), owning the plant design intent and requirements while the partners contribute equipment know-how and manufacturing capability.
• Work across engineering disciplines and with commercial and strategy teams to drive plant-level design, integration, and performance.
• Develop the team and department as Blykalla grows into a nuclear-regulated organisation, including hiring, project delivery, quality, and export-control requirements.

Who you'll get to work with

You will report to the VP of Engineering and join the Engineering leadership team, working closely with peer managers across Mechanical, Nuclear and Safety, Test and Validation, Quality, Material, Layout and Piping, and Electrical and I&C. You will also collaborate with commercial, strategy, and special projects teams, and represent Blykalla in technical discussions with industrial partners and potential customers on plant performance and integration.

• More than 10 years of professional experience in fluid systems, thermohydraulics, or system engineering on complex power or process plants, with a meaningful portion of that time spent on plant-level system integration rather than component design in isolation.
• Prior experience leading a technical team as a line manager or discipline lead.
• Broad technical competence across the fluid systems scope.
• Solid working understanding of plant layout, piping design, and the electrical and I&C scope, sufficient to challenge and integrate work owned by neighbouring teams even without being the discipline expert.
• A track record of managing complex supplier and partner relationships in a codevelopment mode, from concept through qualification, with the ability to own the plant design intent while giving partners the space to bring their expertise.
• Comfort writing clear technical specifications, chairing design reviews, and making decisions with incomplete information, with the temperament to argue your case and to change your mind when the evidence changes.
• Fluent in English, spoken and written.
• Fluency in Swedish is a plus.

Meritorious skills

• Experience in the nuclear industry, ideally with exposure to Generation IV reactor programmes or comparable frontier technologies.
• Prior experience with nuclear licensing, whether supporting a submittal to a regulator (SSM, NRC, or equivalent) or interfacing with licensing teams during design development.
• Background in a scale-up or early-stage technology development environment, in addition to more mature industrial settings.
• Familiarity with ASME III, RCC-M, RCC-MRx, PED, or equivalent nuclear-grade design codes, and with the transition into an NQA-1 quality environment.
• Experience with plant heat balance and thermodynamic cycle modelling tools and with the technical inputs that feed LCOE and energy system models.
• Experience with PLM systems and plant engineering tools (Aras Innovator, AVEVA, Hexagon, AutoPlant, Kadmatic, or equivalent).
• Prior experience commissioning or operating a nuclear or thermal power plant, and comfort translating operational lessons back into design decisions.
