StFX University is seeking a Manager, Financial Reporting & Budgeting to play a key role in supporting the University's financial planning, reporting, and compliance functions. Reporting to the Controller, this position is responsible for coordinating financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and endowment administration while ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of financial information.

The Manager provides advanced financial analysis, prepares complex reports, and oversees key financial processes that support institutional accountability and stewardship of endowed and donor-restricted funds. Working collaboratively across the University, the successful candidate will support audit readiness, ensure timely completion of financial cycles, and contribute to sound financial decision-making and long-term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and coordinate internal and external financial reporting, ensuring compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Support the annual audit process by maintaining strong internal controls, audit documentation, and financial reporting integrity.
  • Manage accounting and administration activities related to endowed and donor-restricted funds, ensuring compliance with donor intentions and institutional policies.
  • Prepare financial analyses, reports, and presentations for senior leadership, governance committees, and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development of annual budgets, multi-year financial plans, forecasts, and institutional financial projections.
  • Monitor budget performance, conduct variance analysis, and provide recommendations to support effective financial management and decision-making.
  • Partner with departments across the University to provide financial guidance, support budget planning, and ensure compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Oversee assigned grants, projects, contracts, conferences, and restricted funding accounts, including financial monitoring and reporting.
  • Perform complex accounting analyses, prepare journal entries, and support ongoing financial operations and process improvements.
  • Review financial transactions and workflow approvals to ensure appropriate budget alignment, policy compliance, and accurate accounting treatment.

Qualifications

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation in good standing.
  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive experience in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards, financial reporting requirements, and internal control frameworks; experience with ASNPO standards is considered an asset.
  • Experience preparing and analyzing complex financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and management reports.
  • Knowledge of Canadian corporate tax, HST reporting requirements, and regulatory reporting; experience with U.S. tax filings is an asset.
  • Experience working with endowments, investments, restricted funds, or fund accounting is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret financial data, identify trends, and provide strategic recommendations to support decision-making.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships and explain complex financial information to non-financial audiences.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial management systems; experience with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration, continuous improvement, and customer service.
