The Opportunity

We’re looking to fill a Manager, Finance position at RFA Bank of Canada!

Reporting to the Corporate Controller, the Manager, Finance, is responsible for managing the reporting, analysis and reconciliations for the financial close process. The position also assists with monthly and quarterly internal and external financial and regulatory reporting, and the implementation of new accounting standards and processes. The individual will be a key leader in daily accounting, the general ledger and key financial reports including financial statements.

Core Responsibilities

As the Manager, Finance, you will:

Service Deliver/Stakeholder Management:

  • Review general ledger activity, investigate variances or unusual items, coordinate responses to audit and management requests, and escalate more complex matters to the Controller.
  • Work with Finance, Risk, Treasury, Tax, Audit, and other internal teams to provide accounting information & help resolve day-to-day accounting matters.

Planning and Coordination:

  • Plan, coordinate, and monitor assigned close activities, including journal entries, reconciliations, variance analysis, supporting schedules, and follow-up on outstanding items.
  • Coordinate with the financial reporting manager, accounts payable manager, tax service providers, auditors, and other stakeholders to provide required input and support.

Leadership and Managing Others:

  • Manage assigned direct reports by setting priorities, reviewing work, monitoring deadlines, providing coaching and feedback, and supporting employee development.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership over assigned accounting processes and team deliverables, and escalate staffing, performance, policy, or complex technical matters to the Controller when needed.

Autonomy/Independence of Action:

  • Work independently within established accounting policies, internal controls, close timelines, and guidance from the Controller.
  • Resolve routine and moderately complex accounting matters, review or recommend journal entries and reconciliations, and seek Controller approval for significant judgments, unusual transactions, or matters with broader reporting impact.

Decision Making/Impact of Decisions:

  • Make recommendations and decisions within assigned processes, including close priorities, reconciliations, journal entries, issue resolution, controls, and team deliverables.

Others:

  • Support technical accounting analysis, accounting documentation, audit requests, process documentation, finance system initiatives, risk and control assessments, budgeting and forecasting inputs, and ad-hoc finance projects assigned by the Controller.
  • Investigate accounting issues, account fluctuations, reconciliation differences, data inconsistencies, control exceptions, and unusual transactions using sound judgment and supporting documentation.
  • Identify root causes, assess financial impact, recommend practical solutions, and document conclusions clearly for management, audit, or reporting purposes.
  • Prepare clear and organized analysis and explanations for both technical and non-technical audiences, while demonstrating professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment with sensitive financial information.
  • Build strong relationships with peers, management and cross-function teams, fostering a culture of teamwork and shared success.

What You’ll Need to Succeed

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including general ledger accounting, reconciliations, month-end close, financial controls, and review of accounting work.
  • Experience supervising or managing direct reports, including assigning work, reviewing deliverables, coaching employees, and supporting development.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or a related field.
  • CPA designation required.
  • Experience in banking, financial services, mortgage lending, public accounting, financial reporting support, IFRS technical accounting, financial systems, process improvement, or audit coordination is preferred.

What Sets You Apart

  • Strong working knowledge of corporate accounting, general ledger controls, reconciliations, month-end close, IFRS accounting principles, internal controls, audit support, and financial analysis.
  • Experience working with NetSuite, large accounting datasets & supporting schedules and process documentation.
  • Knowledge of banking, regulatory reporting concepts & tax support processes is an asset.
