Canadian Finance’s Expense Management team is a high-performing group who are key business partners providing financial advice and support to Canada’s Business Units, Enablement Functions, Technology and Corporate teams.
This team is accountable for Canada’s expense planning, budgeting, forecasting, reporting and analysis to drive expense management across Sun Life Canada and support strategic decisions.
Reporting to the Director, Expense Management, the incumbent plays a leadership role in delivering end-to-end expense management through data driven insights and enhanced reporting to the Canadian Executive Team (CET), President Sun Life Canada, President & Chief Executive Officer, Board of Directors and Investors. This role is responsible for managing the development, messaging and review of Canadian expense management reporting, presentations and analyses. In addition, this role will support the transformation of expense management in Canada through evolving reporting, elevating relevant insights and developing new frameworks, metrics and dashboards.
Through extensive involvement with Canada’s Business Units, Enablement Functions, Technology and Corporate teams, the individual will develop a broad knowledge of all areas, financial and business drivers, and key performance indicators within Sun Life Canada. This position is also responsible for fostering and building a positive, engaging and inclusive team environment, that proactively anticipates business needs and recommends new opportunities and/or enhancements.
Your responsibilities will include:
Coach, develop and mentor the CPA Leadership Program candidate, offering ongoing guidance on daily work management and priorities.
Manage the monthly/quarterly/annual expense analysis, reporting and forecasting deliverables identifying key metrics, trends, insights and expense saving opportunities across Sun Life Canada.
Manage the development of Workiva expense dashboards, analytics and presentations to measure progress on planned spend, savings and financial discipline.
Lead and support expense analyses to provide relevant, concise executive insights, identify key drivers to enhance operating leverage, and advance deeper insights and holistic expense metrics (including IFRS17 segmented reporting).
Support key Canada and Business Unit expense analysis projects
Actively participate in cross-functional initiatives to advance the business, including assuming various roles within huddles, problem solving/continuous improvement teams and reporting on expense and business indicators.
Pursue continuous improvement opportunities for deliverables and processes, supporting the business’ performance objectives and Canadian Finance vision.
Provide support on various expense initiatives as required
We are looking for someone with:
Accounting designation (CPA/CMA/CA/CGA)
Strong prioritization skills to meet tight timelines in a high-performance environment
Demonstrated experience in expenses and understanding of cost drivers and unit costs
Energetic self-starter who takes initiative and works with minimum supervision
Manages through complexity and ambiguity by maintaining focus, flexibility and positive ‘can-do’ attitude, with a strong Owners Mindset.
Attention to detail to ensure accuracy and delivery of quality materials to an executive audience.
Drives for action by acting with speed, decisiveness and sense of urgency. Assumes responsibility until the problem is solved.
Superior written and communication skills to share relevant information at the executive level in a compelling, succinct and diplomatic manner.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
