Job Description

Con Edison, a multibillion-dollar energy utility, is leading the clean energy transition in New York City and Westchester County. We are investing hundreds of millions of dollars annually to integrate distributed resources into our electric and gas systems, support electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and scale adoption of energy efficiency and clean heating technologies across our customers. The Area Station Planning team is at the core of the Con Edison strategic vision to help the New York State achieve its Climate Leadership & Community Protection Act (CLCPA) goals.

Reporting to the Section Manager, the Manager is pivotal to managing engineers and coordinating with stakeholders in planning the electric infrastructure, specifically at the Sub-transmission feeder, Area Substation and 4 kV Unit Substation level. The selected candidate will identify & communicate solutions for load relief projects by collaborating with internal & external stakeholders, renewable energy developers, utilities, and government funding agencies. Selected candidate will develop subject matter expertise in Area Substation planning processes and objectives, identifying load relief recommendations for supply and substations, facilitate project feasibility and coordination with different planning, engineering and operations groups from conceptualization, funding, to implementation.

The Manager will provide both engineering and business support associated with implementation of existing and new planning processes to prepare the grid for the clean energy future. This is a great role to demonstrate your ability to drive results, demonstrate application of cross-disciplinary skills to support the clean energy space and gain first hand experience in managing a team to produce meaningful impact customers.

Core Responsibilities

  • Manage team in preparation of Ten-Year and Twenty-Year (Long-Term) Area Substation/4kV Load Relief Programs for all operational regions.
  • Lead and hold meetings with stakeholders in different operating regions and engineering groups for coordinating load relief work, project feasibility, progress, costs, and emerging challenges.
  • Manage assignments such as load flow studies to support the sub-transmission feeder and area substation supply to the distribution system.
  • Manage meetings with stakeholders to track unit substations, area station, feeder ratings and capabilities that impact planning & operation.
  • Work with internal stake holders to evaluate solutions that are cost effective, non-traditional alternatives with the objective to provide load relief to meet forecasted demand & consideration of future needs.
  • Lead team to develop materials for communication of load relief program to facilitate annual stakeholder meetings.
  • Manage and execute annual deliverables in a timely manner to meet internal and external compliance deadlines.
  • Work with stake holders in Commodity Forecasting to interpret and implement the electric forecast for planning and impact studies.
  • Support white paper development to procure capital funding for load relief, track project costs and funding.
  • Lead efforts to maintain development, update of databases & one-line diagrams to support planning, operational and system impact studies.
  • Manage maintenance and update to internal process guides and specifications.
  • Work with Distribution Planning & Analytics team to inform Risk Adjusted Planning, Proactive Planning to inform timing and scope of load relief at distribution area substation and sub-transmission feeder level.
  • Provide input & support to Electric Operations Regions, System Operation, Substation Operations, Customer Energy Solutions, Transmission Planning, Central Engineering groups such as Asset Management, Transmission Line Engineering, and other stakeholders as required.
  • Assume delegation for Section Manager when required.
  • Perform special tasks (technical and non-technical) and assignments as required.

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree In Engineering and Minimum 8 years of related work experience or
  • Master's Degree In Engineering and Minimum 8 years of engineering work experience

Relevant Work Experience

  • Proven leadership skills, innovation, and ability to adapt to change, required.
  • Relevant work experience, including technical knowledge of Con Edison's electrical system, energy storage systems, project management, and construction, required.
  • Experience with planning, engineering and/or operation of the electric system -Transmission system, Area Substation and/or 4 kV Unit Substation, distribution system, preferred.
  • Knowledge of power systems, transmission and distribution, preferred.
  • Relevant experience and knowledge on forecasting, demand management programs, and capital deferment mechanisms preferred.
  • A working understanding of Power System analysis tools, database applications, and handling & management of large volume of data, required.
  • Good communication, negotiation, and organizational skills and accountability, required.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, demonstrate excellent problem-solving abilities. Providing exemplary customer service to supporting teams and organizations, required.
  • Ability to conduct presentations to audiences of all sizes and types, required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Project, Teams, OneDrive, etc.), as well as other company software systems, required.

  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
  • Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs
  • Ability to work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and/or other equipment
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
  • Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
  • Work rotating shifts, including nights, midnights, weekends, and holidays
  • Use personal vehicle(s), and be able to transport, store, and secure company laptops and other job-related equipment in vehicle. Acknowledge that reimbursement for use of personal vehicle is available through the company mileage procedure

Additional Physical Demands

  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to work from the Company's corporate headquarters in New York City
  • Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed.
  • May be required to carry handouts, laptop computer, etc. to meetings.
