Job Description

Overview

United Community is seeking a Manager of Data Engineering to lead the team that builds and operates the pipelines and platforms every analytics product in the bank depends on. This is both a leadership and a hands-on role: you will manage and mentor a team of data engineers and data platform engineers while staying close enough to the work to set technical direction, review builds, and unblock complex problems.

Sitting within Enterprise Data, you will own our ingestion, transformation, and platform layer end to end, from source system connectivity and pipeline orchestration through modeled, historized data the analytics layer can consume without rework. You will partner with the analytics and data governance functions so that the data the bank relies on is accurate, timely, and traceable to its source.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead a team of data engineers and data platform engineers, providing coaching, guidance, performance management, and career development
  • Set technical direction for the data engineering and platform layer, staying hands-on with development on highly visible, high-impact solutions
  • Own the design, build, and operation of ingestion and transformation pipelines that deliver source data into the enterprise data platform on a reliable schedule
  • Advance the migration of workloads from the on-premises environment to the cloud data platform while sustaining on-premises operations and service levels through the transition
  • Own the raw and historized data layer, including Data Vault modeling standards, load patterns, and the conventions the team builds against
  • Own data platform administration, including environment and role structure, compute sizing, performance tuning, and consumption cost management
  • Establish and enforce engineering standards for version control, code review, testing, deployment, and environment promotion
  • Ensure production reliability through monitoring, alerting, documented recovery procedures, and clear ownership of pipeline failures
  • Partner with Information Security and Infrastructure on connectivity, access provisioning, and credential management for data platform components
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for third-party vendors, managing those relationships and holding partners accountable to delivery and quality expectations
  • Ensure pipelines and components adhere to enterprise data governance and security standards, partnering with the data governance function
  • Maintain documentation for pipelines, data models, platform configuration, and operational runbooks
  • Identify and define process-improvement and modernization opportunities across the data engineering stack
  • Compliance Training: Participate in all required compliance training, including Bank Secrecy Act/anti-money laundering training, as well as internal and external training programs, online training, meetings, and seminars/conferences, etc.
  • Other Duties: This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive list of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee. Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.

Requirements For Success

  • Education: Bachelor's degree or above in a related field; master’s preferred
  • Experience: 7-10 years in data engineering, data warehousing, or data platform engineering, including experience leading or mentoring others
  • Required Skills:
  • Hands-on proficiency with cloud data platforms and enterprise data pipeline tooling, with depth in one or more of Snowflake, Coalesce, SQL Server, SSIS, or NiFi/Openflow and the ability to work fluently across a mixed on-premises and cloud environment
  • Advanced SQL, including reading query profiles, diagnosing performance issues, and tuning queries against high-volume tables
  • Working knowledge of data warehousing methodologies, including dimensional (Kimball) modeling and Data Vault
  • Experience designing and operating batch and incremental ingestion from relational, file, and API sources
  • Experience running production data operations, including scheduling, monitoring, incident response, and service level commitments
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving ability
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at every level of the enterprise, from engineers to the C-suite
  • Ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams and translate ambiguous business needs into well-scoped engineering work
  • Preferred Skills:
  • Direct experience implementing Data Vault on Snowflake
  • Experience with Coalesce or a comparable metadata-driven transformation platform
  • Experience leading a cloud data platform migration while maintaining legacy operations
  • Snowflake certification, such as SnowPro Core or above
  • Python for data engineering, automation, and tooling
  • Background in banking, financial services, or another regulated industry
  • Experience managing third-party data vendor and consulting relationships
