The Manager – Corporate Communications directs and executes comprehensive communications strategies that support the business objectives, values and shared purpose of ALLETE and its family of companies: Minnesota Power; Superior Water, Light and Power; ALLETE Clean Energy; New Energy Equity and BNI Energy. This rewarding position exercises substantial independent judgment in managing high-level, complex public information and public relations campaigns, supervising professionals in the Corporate Communications Department, and advising executive leadership. The Manager works closely with and reports directly to the Director of Corporate Communications and functions as the department’s second-in-command.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Strategic Communications Leadership Develop and implement integrated communications strategies, including external and internal communications, marketing, social media, and visual communications, to advance organizational priorities.
  • Brand and Reputation Management Oversee and safeguard the company’s brand and reputation through consistent, high-quality messaging, effective storytelling and proactive communication initiatives.
  • Media Relations Direct and manage the company’s media relations, including developing and maintaining relationships with media representatives, preparing press releases, talking points, organizing media events, and occasionally serving as company spokesperson.
  • Crisis Communications In collaboration with the Director, develop and execute strategies to address emerging issues, protect the company’s reputation, and ensure effective message delivery during crisis situations.
  • Content Oversight Develop and oversee the production of high-level written, visual, and digital materials, including advertising, customer programs marketing, outreach and website content, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Internal Communications Direct strategies for informing employees about company news, policies, and procedures, and support staff engagement and organizational culture.
  • Collaboration and Leadership Build a culture of teamwork, transparency, and accountability within the Corporate Communications team and across departments. Mentor and develop staff.
  • Executive Partnership Advise and collaborate with senior leaders and cross-functional teams to align communication efforts with company objectives. Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leaders.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Communications, Public Relations, Advertising & Marketing, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of related work experience with progressively increasing responsibilities; a master’s degree may be considered as equivalent to one year of experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position will report regularly in person to Duluth, MN.
  • Media experience preferred, but not required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in fast-paced, high-pressure environments, with proven experience in crisis communications.
  • Decisive, collaborative leader with a track record of building strong relationships; proactive, self-motivated, and results-oriented.
  • Strategic communicator able to align messaging with business objectives and advise senior leadership.
  • This position may be subject to assessment of skills, job match and/or aptitude.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
The expected annual compensation range for this position is $130,400 – $155,400. This position qualifies for a comprehensive benefits package, including an incentive program, retirement benefits, medical, dental and vision plans, health savings account, flexible spending account, life insurance, disability, tuition reimbursement, voluntary benefits, paid absences, and more.
