Job Description

The South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service based in Bunbury which provides a variety of health services to Aboriginal people in the South West, Great South, Upper wheatbelt and Peel Regions of Western Australia. SWAMS delivers a wide range of Services including GP Clinics, Primary Health Care, Counselling and community host various programs. SWAMS has a strong growth strategy through partnership opportunities and future community development.

SWAMS is dedicated to enhancing employment opportunities and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This position is designated under Section 50 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA), and as such, only Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply.

About the role:

The Male Case Worker in the Out of Home Care team organises and supports activities that help young people build life skills, social skills, and cultural connection. He works with carers, families, Aboriginal organisations, and other supports. He also helps young people prepare to leave care and live independently, while following organisational and legal requirements.

Essential Criteria:

  • Knowledge of developmental needs of children and young people, particularly young males.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and contemporary issues
    affecting them.
  • Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with communities, families, children
    and young people.
  • Sound interpersonal skills and the ability to proactively establish and sustain
    effective stakeholder relationships.
  • Sound written skills, including report writing
  • Demonstrated ability to manage own time and work resources.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member.
  • Must reside in the South West and have local knowledge about the community.
  • Demonstrated experience assisting in the development of community projects.
  • Ability to drive to outreach to the Greater Bunbury and South West regions.
  • Ability to take direction, determine priorities and manage workloads to meet agreed
    timelines and objectives.
  • Good interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member and independently with minimal supervision.
