Job Description

Bridges Section delivers new bridges/structures from inception to construction within the team, as well as working collaboratively with Infrastructure Projects Directorate. Bridges Section is responsible for ensuring that all new bridges/structures over or carrying roads delivered by Roads, Infrastructure Projects & Rail Directorates and Developers are safe, economical, durable, sustainable, environmentally acceptable and fit well within the landscape.

Bridges Section is the Overseeing Organisation for Scotland for all trunk road structures and is responsible for all structures technical standards, advice, structures asset management, specifications and guidance. Bridges Section staff represent Transport Scotland and lead on Scottish and UK national committees, technical bodies, groups and National Highways technical project boards. This allows sharing of information, best practice and development, reviewing and updating of all structures standards and guidance.

• Management and completion of the annual bridge inspection and the structures routine, cyclical and planned maintenance programmes for the four major bridges in the South East Unit; A9000 Forth Road Bridge, M90 Queensferry Crossing, A876 Clackmannanshire and A985 Kincardine Bridges (the Forth Bridges).
• Management and completion of the annual bridge strengthening and replacement programmes where these are relevant to the Forth Bridges.
• Management and completion of the specialist improvement programmes, including high risk parapet sites, scour assessments and at risk pier assessments, Hidden Defects, Half Joints, Post-Tensioned Special Inspections and footbridges vulnerable to impact where these are relevant to the Forth Bridges.
  Project management, overseeing, evaluation and providing advice on bridge and structural aspects of both routine and major schemes within Roads, Major Projects & Rail Directorates and external developer-led schemes where these are relevant to the Forth Bridges.
• Manage land and property issues where these may affect Transport Scotland’s interests, particularly in relation to future maintenance access and proximity to our structures.
• Undertake the Technical Approval Authority role under the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges regarding the Approval in Principle (AIP) for relevant works to the Forth Bridges and consideration of Departures for Standard prior to submission for Chief Bridge Engineer endorsement.
• Specialist technical co-ordination duties, technical advice and contribution to National Standards, Specifications, Design Guidance and Employer’s Requirements.

Working pattern
Our standard hours are 35 hours per week and we offer a range of flexible working options depending on the needs of the role.

Transport Scotland staff in hybrid-compatible roles should aim to work in-person 40% of the time, either in an office or other agreed work location.

Pay supplement
This post currently attracts a £7862 annual pay supplement, applicable after a 3 months competency qualifying period. The payment will be backdated to your start date in the role. Pay supplements are reviewed regularly and there is one currently underway. Changes will be communicated when the review is concluded.

Security checks
Successful candidates must complete the Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), before they can be appointed. BPSS is comprised of four main pre-employment checks – Identity, Right to work, Employment History and a Criminal Record check (unspent convictions).
