This temporary position is with NC Dept of Agriculture – Sciences Center, located at 4400 Reedy Creek Road, Raleigh NC, Wake County. 

Job Order Hourly Rate of Pay: $20.00 (Based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application). 

OF WORK:
This temporary position will be assigned to the Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Sciences Center.

Work Schedule: 7:00 am – 4:00 pm

The Steve Troxler Agricultural Sciences Center (ASC) houses the regulatory laboratories for the Department of Agriculture. The labs consist of the Food & Drug Protection Division Chemistry, Microbiology, and Pesticide Residue labs; the Veterinary Division Animal Disease Diagnostic lab; the Standards Division Weights and Measures lab, and the Standards Division Fuel Quality testing lab.

The Facility Maintenance section is responsible for all buildings and maintenance for the ASC and the three veterinary division’s satellite laboratories. This position assists with maintenance and repairs of the general physical buildings, mechanical/electrical/plumbing systems, equipment, and surrounding grounds. This includes assisting with monitoring operating systems including chillers, boilers, HVAC, and incinerators, and repairing plumbing, electrical and carpentry issues.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification.  The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities listed within this vacancy announcement will be used only as management preferences and will be used to screen for the most qualified pool of applicants.

  • Basic knowledge of the practices, tools, and materials used in general building maintenance, carpentry and/or the repair of equipment
  • A valid NC driver’s license
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs
  • Ability to effectively communicate and understand verbal and written instructions regarding work assignments​

Highly Preferred:

Assigned trade areas: general maintenance, carpentry, mechanical systems, electrical systems, plumbing, HVAC, groundskeeping and incinerator operation and maintenance (must have at least one).

May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal Technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulation Part 82, Subpart F.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one (1) year of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
