This position is responsible for participating in the maintenance of the City’s stormwater system.

Examples of duties

  • Troubleshoot basic maintenance problems involving the City’s stormwater system.

  • Performs concrete and asphalt repair of stormwater-related structures.

  • Operates jackhammers, concrete saws, drills, and other small construction-related hand tools.

  • Operates line trimmers, mowers, chainsaws, blowers, and other small engine-powered equipment to mow grass, remove trees and overgrowth, and gather debris.

  • Uses shovels, rakes, pitchforks, and other hand tools to maintain ditches and canals and related drainage structures.

  • Cleans and assists in the operation and maintenance of stormwater pumping stations.

  • Maintains the storm drainage system.

  • Participates in maintenance and repair work.

  • Cleans and maintains facilities, including mowing grass and removing litter

  • Serves in the Critical Workforce for the Department, requiring service during disasters, weather events such as tropical storms or hurricanes, etc., in a support role at the Critical Workforce Shelter or other assigned locations.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent; six (6) months of related maintenance experience necessary.

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

May require the following certifications/licenses:

  • ICS100 and ICS700
  • Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Traffic control Flagging certification

Supplemental information

Knowledge of equipment and tools necessary to perform essential duties.

Skill in establishing priorities and organizing work.

Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles and equipment.

MINIMUM STANDARDS:

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Maintenance Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The Maintenance Crew Chief spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include .directions from the Maintenance Crew Chief. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related maintenance duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to assist in the performance of stormwater maintenance duties. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficiency of flood control and safety of city roadways.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, and members of the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, provide services, and resolve problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, stooping, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
