The Department of Public Works is responsible for ensuring that City-owned transportation infrastructure and facilities, transit services, and capital improvement programs are designed, engineered, constructed, maintained, and/or modified in a presentable and safe condition. The department coordinates a variety of activities and services, including the preparation of plans and specifications for public works-related construction projects; the design and inspection of public facilities; and ensuring the proper installation of all public improvements made in new subdivisions, such as streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, water mains, sewer lines, and drainage.

The Streets Section of the Public Works Department ensures City of Santa Maria roadways remain safe, functional, and presentable. The Streets Division works on pavement maintenance and asphalt repair, concrete restoration, weed abatement, and the installation of high-visibility lighting, signage, and striping.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Under the general direction of the assigned supervisor, performs a wide variety of skilled, unskilled, or semi-skilled maintenance work, including the operation of light or heavy equipment. Supervision is not normally a responsibility of this classification, but incumbents may act as lead workers for temporarily assigned employees or special projects.

Maintenance Worker II may supervise the work of unskilled and semi-skilled laborers and/or court-appointed workers. These classifications are currently in multiple divisions and departments across the City of Santa Maria and may be flexibly staffed at the discretion of the Department Director.

The Maintenance Worker I/II position is an Individual Contributor role that provides maintenance, repair, and other services to internal and external customers. Their role enables Santa Maria residents to enjoy safe, beautiful, and well-maintained streets.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The City of Santa Maria is seeking a capable and dedicated individual to join the streets section of the Public Works Department. The ideal candidate will have experience performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled street maintenance and repair activities, including asphalt repairs, concrete restoration, curb and sidewalk maintenance, signage and streetlight maintenance, street striping, traffic signal maintenance, and weed abatement. The successful candidate will possess knowledge of current street maintenance practices, demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and quality workmanship, and be a collaborative and reliable team member committed to preserving accessible, clean, and safe public infrastructure for the community.

NOTE: A condition of employment for Maintenance Worker I/II positions assigned to the streets section is the possession of a valid Class B Driver's License. This requirement must be fulfilled within twenty-six weeks of appointment.

Examples of duties

These duties are a representative example; position assignments may vary depending on the business needs of the department and organization. Positions assigned to the streets section of the Public Works Department may:

Maintenance Worker I

  • Break out concrete and asphalt, perform concrete forming and finishing work, and replace asphalt.
  • Clear and flush sewer mains.
  • Perform tasks in the weed abatement program.
  • Place and repair traffic signs, and paint paving markings and streetlight poles.
  • Assist electricians in minor electrical maintenance.
  • Install street barricades and cones prior to street repair activities, and direct and control traffic around work sites.
  • Operate a variety of equipment including light trucks, welding equipment, front-loader, concrete saw, backhoe, skip-loader, A-frame, tamper, jackhammer, and other equipment utilized.

Maintenance Worker II

  • Experienced journey-level for the above duties.
  • May be placed in charge of a job site in the absence of a supervisor, crew leader, or senior crew leader, or when a small crew is assigned to a job.

OTHER DUTIES

  • Uphold the values of the organization and have a strong customer service orientation.
  • Demonstrate regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Perform other related projects and duties as assigned.
  • Scope of assigned area will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the Department Director.

Qualifications

Maintenance Worker I

  • Sufficient training or experience in maintenance work; and
  • Graduation from high school and/or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Maintenance Worker II

  • A minimum of two years of experience as a Maintenance Worker I, or part-time experience as a Laborer III, equivalent to that gained as a Maintenance Worker I in the area of assignment, or those exceptions as indicated herein for a certain division.
  • To promote to Maintenance Worker II in another division or area of assignment, applicant must successfully complete a performance test designed to demonstrate competency in the position sought; and
  • Graduation from high school and/or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
  • Employees may be considered for a level II advancement after completion of two years in their current assignment, at the Department Director's discretion.
  • Current technical/professional knowledge of complex principles, methods, standards, and techniques associated with the scope of work of a recognized profession, such as:
  • Common hand tools and light power tools; follow oral and written instructions; read and interpret maps, drawings, product label instructions, and equipment operation procedures.
  • Analytical skills to operate and perform minor adjustments to mechanical devices and motorized equipment; general construction and maintenance materials, procedures, and equipment as related to parks, streets, and facilities maintenance, and solid waste.
  • Effective verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Microsoft Office Suite (or equivalent).
  • Effective use of computer and other office equipment.
  • Possession of licenses and/or certificates associated with the assignment, such as:
  • A valid Class B Driver's License must be obtained within one year of appointment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The incumbent must possess a valid and appropriate driver's license, and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and meet City liability requirements to drive for City business.
