This position Responsible for performing skilled work in the maintenance of streets, park grounds and facilities. Assists in the maintenance of the City's open ditches, canals, basins, sidewalks, and other areas.

HOURS: 6:30 A.M. 0 5:00 P.M. Four 10 hour workdays (Mon.-Fri.)

Examples of duties

  • Performs skilled manual & semi-skilled work in asphalt installation; repair and maintenance of City streets.
  • Employs basic skills in the use of hand tools required for asphalt work.
  • Be familiar with equipment capabilities; perform daily routine checks & inspections, make minor repairs & adjustments.
  • Performs other duties and tasks such as leaf collection, construction repair, winter storm activities and maintenance of stormwater systems.
  • Follows safety guidelines.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High School Degree or equivalent.
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class CDL- B driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina within six months of hire.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • The work is light work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion, sitting, standing, and walking. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Required close visual acuity to perform activities like viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
