The Position

The Maintenance Worker supports the safe and effective operation of Housing Services and Lift
Community Services programs and sites by assisting with upkeep, attending to routine maintenance, and collaborating with service providers and contractors. The role contributes to creating a clean, secure, and welcoming space by ensuring repairs, inspections, and upkeep are completed in line with organizational standards and BC Housing requirements.

Qualifications

  • High School completion required.
  • Experience in trades and/or building maintenance.
  • Knowledge of building codes and related legislation.
  • Skills in a variety of areas such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, janitorial, and use of tools.
  • Experience working with populations impacted by homelessness, substance use, or mental health challenges.
  • Understanding of harm reduction, Housing First, trauma-informed, and person-centered practices.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite and MS 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle (truck preferred; mileage compensated).
  • Clear Criminal Record Check required.

Skills

  • Basic building maintenance and repair skills
  • Move-in and move-out unit preparation
  • Building systems awareness, including plumbing, electrical, mechanical, drains, security, and intercom systems
  • Groundskeeping, cleaning, and garbage removal
  • Health and safety awareness, including hazard identification and incident prevention
  • Ability to coordinate with contractors, service providers, and internal staff
  • Strong documentation and record-keeping skills
  • Ability to use maintenance trackers and prioritize tasks
  • Budget awareness and ability to confirm expenditures as directed
  • Ability to respond calmly and professionally to resident and facility needs
  • Knowledge of overdose prevention, infection control, and extreme weather response procedures
  • Ability to support safe, clean, functional, and welcoming housing environments

Working Condition and Physical Requirements

  • Monday–Friday, with flexibility for some evenings and weekends.
  • Work may occur in environments where individuals face multiple barriers.
  • Must be able to safely lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical duties related to maintenance.
  • Attends to tasks using industrial cleaning supplies and equipment, so facilities are safe and functional.
