Maintenance Worker - Term Position

Working as part of the Maintenance team, this person will take direction from the Maintenance Lead or Support Services Manager. Will work on projects as assigned in either the PCH or the EPH. Communicate on the completion of assignments and perform work in an efficient and reliable way. This involves maintaining a safe and workable environment both internally and externally at Meadowood Manor Personal Care Home and the Meadowood Towers.

• Is a strong team player
• Current and satisfactory criminal record check and Adult Abuse Registry

• High school diploma with the ability to read and write English at a Grade 12 level.

• Should be computer literate.
• Must have good interpersonal skills
• Ability to work in a calm and professional manner and able to show adaptability

and flexibility.
• Physically capable of meeting the demands of the position.

  • Ability to carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving variables in standardized situations.
  • Must have a valid drivers license
  • Experience in building and mechanical equipment, painting & patching. Has a knowledge of machines and tools, including assembly, repairs and general maintenance.
  • Good skills in the use of hand and power tools
  • Ability to effectively present information in one to one and small group situations to

other employees.


Physical demands and job environment
• Employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to fingers, handle or feel,

reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, bend and twist, stoop, kneel,

crouch, crawl, talk and hear.

• Employee must be able to lift and move heavy loads.

• Exposed to wet and humid conditions, heights, confined spaces, fumes, airborne

particles, chemicals, outside weather and conditions, vibrations and noise.

DUTIES

- Staff adheres to PHIA. Work relating to residents confidential and must not be

communicated to other persons except in the course of duty.

- Will follow department policies and procedures, quality control initiatives and all Work Safe requirements.
- At start of day, will do rounds of the PCH and the EPH. Work requisitions are

collected, prioritized as to urgency and work will be assigned.

- Completes the daily departmental checklist.

- Records all completed jobs in the preventative maintenance log.

- Performs routine and extensive preventative maintenance and repairs on building,

mechanical equipment and utility systems.

- Performs outside custodial duties such as snow removal, grass cutting and grounds

maintenance.

- Orders supplies and deals with contractors, suppliers and trades people if required.

- Participates in fire drills and disaster drills.

- Completes EPH suite repairs and room repairs in the PCH upon the turn around of

a suite or room.

- Rotation and movement of garbage bins.

- Maintains the organization of the Maintenance Area.

- Receives and puts away supplies and equipment from back entrance or front desk.

- Completes required inspections and audits as required.

- Shares On-Call responsibility with other maintenance staff to ensure a 24/7 365

day coverage.
- Participates with in-service education and staff development programs.
- Attends general staff meetings, and committee meetings as assigned.
- Attends mandatory in-services, seminars, courses etc.

- Performs other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

MORE DETAILS:

  • The maintenance worker responds to reports of non-functioning equipment and concerns.
  • Maintains problem log book to record the equipment in need of repair and prioritizes efforts accordingly
  • Maintains facility in operating condition by performing repairs as needed and preventative maintenance
  • Replaces or repairs all appliances and damaged bathroom fixtures; executes general plumbing as needed
  • Maintains overall appearance of rooms; replaces broken mirrors, hangs fixtures, painting, etc
  • Receives and stores housekeeping, laundry, nursing and maintenance supplies
  • Complete a daily walkabout around the physical plant of the building
  • Install, change and repair locks in the building where a locksmith is not required
  • Assist with special projects seasonally such as: set out and clean outdoor furniture, power washing, snow removal and de-icing and etc.
  • Performs other duties as required

Experience

  • 2 Years Maintenance Experience
  • 2 Years Painting
  • 1 Year Carpentry
  • 1 Year Basic Plumbing
  • 1 Year minimum in a personal care or hospital environment

Qualifications and Skills

  • Demonstrated commitment to safe working practices and environment
  • Working knowledge of Fire and Building Codes
  • Pro-active problem solving skills, and demonstrated ability to operate on own initiative
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Able to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Understanding of confidentiality and its importance

This position is subject to a Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Search, an Adult Abuse Registry Check and Immunization Screening report required as well. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred and must submit within 6 weeks of hiring.

The Collective Agreement this position is covered under, is identified by the Union noted above. As a result of The Health Sector Bargaining Unit Review Act, the bargaining agent for this position may differ from the Union identified. This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
