The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, opened on October 1, 1940, is known as “America’s First Superhighway”! This is semi-skilled manual work involving the operation of a maintenance response vehicle and other related maintenance equipment. Work involves assisting in the direction of traffic flow and related duties until the arrival of appropriate crews. Work includes performing janitorial work at assigned maintenance sheds. Detailed instructions are usually received from a supervisor. Work is performed according to established procedures. A supervisor makes periodic inspections during progress and upon completion of work.
Responds to incidents on the turnpike system, patrols the highway and removes debris from the roadway.
Assists with traffic control to direct traffic flow and monitor traffic road conditions as needed.
Operates and maintains the maintenance response vehicle and other related maintenance equipment within licensing requirements.
Performs routine preventative vehicle maintenance tasks, including, but not limited to, lubrication, oil changes and bulb replacements.
Operates PTC radio system for transmitting and receiving information.
Performs routine janitorial work such as, but not limited to, cleaning, removal of trash and rubbish, cleaning of lavatory facilities, and safeguarding and orderly caretaking of building, grounds and equipment.
Assists a skilled worker, such as a carpenter, mechanic, etc., in routine semi-skilled work.
Assists in the cleaning of tools and equipment and the general greasing and lubrication of equipment.
Checks and maintains records on janitorial supplies, highway materials and equipment.
Operates general office equipment.
Uses situational awareness to anticipate and prevent accidents.
Performs related duties as required.
High school diploma or equivalent certification.
Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Position demands include frequent speaking, writing and reading of reports. Position may demand stamina to work long hours in emergency situations, adverse weather conditions or for extended work assignments. Lifts, carries heaving objects or exerts forces equivalent to lifting up to 75 pounds. Works overhead or in a bending, squatting, kneeling position. Position requires frequent travel and/or fieldwork with exposure to roadway traffic. Office environment with low levels of noise, adequate lighting and comfortable temperature. Field environment may include exposure to some undesirable environmental conditions. Physical environment is generally safe, but safety equipment and procedures must be utilized and followed.
