The Maintenance Technician III- serves as a senior technical expert responsible for advanced troubleshooting, system optimization, and reliability improvement across production and utility systems. This role provides technical leadership, mentors other technicians, and partners with supervision and engineering to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant plant operations in a food manufacturing environment.
Direct Responsibilities
- Lead advanced mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and automation troubleshooting across packaging, processing, filling, and utility systems.
- Troubleshoot, replace, configure, and commission Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
- Perform complex repairs, system rebuilds, and precision adjustments on production and utility equipment.
- Diagnose root causes of chronic equipment failures and implement long‑term corrective and preventive solutions.
- Perform advanced PLC troubleshooting and logic interpretation; support and collaborate on logic and control improvements.
- Install, configure, and troubleshoot process control and instrumentation devices including I/Ps, PID loops, and recording devices (e.g., Jumo, ABB, Endress).
- Support and optimize processing, filler, and automated systems for performance, safety, and reliability.
- Execute, validate, and improve preventive maintenance strategies and reliability‑centered maintenance initiatives.
- Support plant utilities including boilers, air compressors, dryers, cooling towers, and chillers.
- Respond to high‑impact production downtime events and lead rapid resolution efforts.
- Mentor, train, and technically guide Maintenance Technicians Levels 1 and 2 and support operator technical development.
Essential Responsibilities
- Follow and champion OSHA safety guidelines, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, and all facility safety policies.
- Maintain strict adherence to GMPs, HACCP, SQF, and plant sanitation standards.
- Ensure all maintenance activities protect product integrity and do not compromise food safety.
- Accurately document maintenance activities, system changes, and reliability improvements in CMMS/EAM systems.
- Apply advanced problem‑solving and analytical techniques to address new, complex, and previously unseen issues.
- Serve as a technical authority and escalation point for complex equipment and system challenges.
- Ensure maintenance practices remain audit‑ready and fully compliant with internal and external requirements.
Skills, Experience & Education
Required:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 5+ years of experience in industrial mechanical, electrical, or automation maintenance.
- Basic computer skills and ability to learn new software and systems.
- Expert‑level troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and PLC‑controlled systems.
- Proficiency with Allen‑Bradley PLC systems (SLC‑5/05 required; ControlLogix preferred).
- Demonstrated knowledge of 3‑phase (480V) electrical circuits, motor starters, and controls.
- Strong understanding of process control instrumentation (I/P, PID loops, sensors, recorders).
- Ability to troubleshoot, adapt, and source non‑OEM replacement components when necessary.
- Advanced understanding of processing, filling, and packaging systems.
- Ability to fabricate and modify equipment.
- Ability to use metal shear, brake, lathe, mill drill press and fabrication tools.
- Proficiency using hand tools, precision instruments, and advanced diagnostic equipment.
- Strong leadership, mentoring, and communication skills.
