Maintenance Technician
About the Role
The Maintenance Technician is a highly experienced, hands-on technician responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining complex manufacturing equipment and facility systems at CVI Laser Optics. This role serves as a technical escalation point for the maintenance team, leads root cause analysis on recurring equipment failures, supports equipment reliability improvements and capital projects, and provides technical guidance and mentorship to other technicians.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and controls-related equipment failures across manufacturing equipment, coating chambers, cleanroom systems, and critical utilities.
- Perform root cause analysis on recurring or significant equipment failures and implement corrective actions, spare-parts strategies, or maintenance plan improvements to prevent recurrence and reduce downtime.
- Troubleshoot electrical systems, sensors, motors, controls, and other equipment components using schematics, technical documentation, and diagnostic tools.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on manufacturing equipment, facility systems, and critical utilities.
- Lead maintenance support for equipment installations, upgrades, commissioning, and capital projects in partnership with Engineering, Facilities, contractors, and equipment vendors.
- Develop and improve preventive maintenance strategies, task lists, job plans, and critical spare parts recommendations for high-impact equipment.
- Use equipment history, failure trends, and maintenance data to identify reliability improvements and recurring issues.
- Serve as a technical escalation point for complex equipment issues and support troubleshooting across the maintenance team.
- Mentor and train other maintenance technicians on troubleshooting techniques, equipment maintenance, and safe work practices.
- Support the Facilities & Maintenance Manager with day-to-day work prioritization and response to critical equipment or facility issues.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, equipment documentation, and completed work within the site's CMMS.
- Coordinate with contractors and vendors as needed for specialized repairs, equipment service, and project work.
- Follow applicable safety procedures, cleanroom requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, and site standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 5+ years of industrial maintenance experience, including complex equipment troubleshooting and repair in a manufacturing, industrial, cleanroom, or facilities environment.
- Technical education, apprenticeship, trade certification, or training in industrial maintenance, electrical, mechanical, mechatronics, or a related field is a plus.
- Experience supporting equipment installations, upgrades, or capital projects.
- Experience in cleanroom, semiconductor, optical, aerospace, medical device, or other precision manufacturing environments is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and industrial equipment systems.
- Familiarity with controls and automation systems such as Niagara, PLCs, ladder logic, Ignition, or similar technologies.
- Strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, equipment manuals, and technical documentation.
- Strong root cause analysis, problem-solving, and equipment diagnostic skills.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance, equipment reliability, and critical spare parts practices.
- Ability to independently troubleshoot and resolve complex or high-priority equipment issues.
- Ability to provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to other technicians.
- Strong attention to detail and documentation skills.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills across Maintenance, Facilities, Engineering, Operations, contractors, and equipment vendors.
- Ability to prioritize multiple maintenance needs and respond effectively to changing production demands.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Regular work in a manufacturing and cleanroom environment, including required cleanroom gowning and contamination-control practices.
- Exposure to manufacturing equipment, moving mechanical parts, electrical systems, chemicals, fumes or airborne particles, and elevated noise levels.
- Work may involve varying temperatures and indoor and outdoor conditions while supporting facility and equipment needs.
- Required personal protective equipment must be worn based on the work being performed.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, crouching, climbing, and use of hands and tools to perform maintenance and repair work.
- Work at heights, on ladders, and in confined or limited-access spaces may be required.
- Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds as needed.
