Job Description

At Mahaska Health, we are looking for a Maintenance Technician to join our healthcare team. A Maintenance Tech performs maintenance of hospital grounds, building and equipment, inside and out to always preserve life and appearance of such. This role is crucial in ensuring that our facilities operate smoothly and maintain a safe environment for both patients and staff. The Maintenance Technician will be responsible for performing a variety of maintenance tasks in the hospital, including troubleshooting and repairing equipment and systems, conducting regular inspections, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. As a Maintenance Technician, you will work closely with other departments to address maintenance requests and ensure that all hospital operations run efficiently.
Full-time - Monday - Friday 8am - 4:30pm + weekend and on-call rotation.
Essential job responsibilities include but are not limited to,
  • Construct, install, and repair structures and fixtures made of metal framing, wood, plywood, and wallboard in patient care areas.
  • Installs and repairs piping systems of water, steam, gas, oil and drains when proper tools are available.
  • Inspect and assess existing structures for maintenance needs and repairs.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests from staff and emergency calls as needed.
  • Collaborate with construction supervisor and facilities director and other construction professionals to ensure timely completion of projects.
  • Assist maintenance and facilities workers as needed.
  • Complete appropriate documentation through devices into the CMMS.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order, ensuring safety protocols are followed.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, adhering to all health and safety guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance performed and report any unresolved issues to management.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, codes, and standards governing the operation and maintenance of healthcare facilities.
  • Must have knowledge of hospital operation, policies and physical layout.
  • Notify Director of any problems or delays in projects.
  • Report defective materials, faulty operation of equipment, and unusual matters to Director and appropriate personnel.
  • Demonstrate and follow standard and prescribed safety regulations using proper precautions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of electrical, plumbing, boiler and pneumatics.
  • Maintains boilers, hot water heaters, air conditioning systems and electrical equipment.
  • Respond to all facility emergency codes.
  • Wear proper PPE (personal protective equipment) when performing job duties.
  • Ability to read and understand SDS sheets.
  • Ability to handle hazardous material.
  • Must perform routine safety checks of electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Able to operate maintenance and power equipment and understand safe and efficient operation.
  • Work from written requisitions or verbal instructions.
  • Report any violation of OSHA Regulations to supervisor.
Job Requirements include but are not limited to,
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of building maintenance, mechanical systems and hand/power tools. Proven experience preferably in a healthcare environment.
  • Knowledge of electrical, plumbing, boiler and pneumatics preferred.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and practices relevant to the construction and healthcare industries.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Willingness to learn hospital-specific safety and compliance standards.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate and effectively communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Required to have a valid driver’s license and proof of good driving record.
  • Required to have limited liability insurance; coverage limit be $100,000 Each/ $300,000 Aggregate or $300,000 Combined Single Limit.
The work environment includes, but is not limited to:
  • Routine work inside an active hospital environment, requiring frequent walking, standing, and light physical labor.
  • Occasional exposure to moderate noise levels, cleaning agents, mechanical spaces, or patient‑care areas.
  • Periodic travel to off‑site clinics, vendors, or regional partners for maintenance support or supply pickup.
  • Availability to respond during emergencies, urgent repairs, or operational disruptions.
  • Ability to lift, move, and carry tools, equipment, and materials as needed to support facility operations.
  • Regularly lift and move items up to 25 lbs as part of daily tasks.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally.
  • Push or pull carts and equipment weighing up to 100 lbs on an occasional basis.
