The Maintenance Supervisor provides hands-on, first-line leadership and technical direction to maintenance employees with minimal guidance to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and effectively. This role maintains a strong field presence while overseeing daily maintenance activities, supporting preventive and predictive maintenance, coordinating priorities with operations, and improving equipment reliability and uptime.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Safety & Compliance
- Maintain a safe work environment by enforcing company policies, safety procedures, and applicable MSHA, state, and federal requirements.
- Promote safe work practices through inspections, job observations, coaching, and identification of unsafe behaviors or conditions.
- Conducts accident investigations, audits, inspections, and provides insight to support continuous improvement.
Supervision & Leadership
- Provide supervision, direction, coaching, and technical guidance to hourly maintenance employees.
- Assign, prioritize, and follow up on daily maintenance work to ensure safe, timely, and quality completion.
- Administer the collective bargaining agreement and plant policies, including addressing personnel concerns and supporting grievance resolution as needed.
- Promote teamwork, communication, accountability, and alignment with company goals.
- Utilize skillset to develop team and improve overall capabilities.
Maintenance Execution & Work Coordination
- Coordinate daily and weekly maintenance activities to support equipment reliability, maintenance efficiency, and operational uptime.
- Partner with operations, planning, contractors, and storeroom teams to prioritize work, reduce production interruptions, and ensure required resources are available.
- Review, prioritize, and manage work orders, backlog, and maintenance schedules in the CMMS system.
- Support special assignments, outages, emergency repairs, and on-call needs as required.
Reliability & Continuous Improvement
- Executes preventive and predictive maintenance practices to improve equipment reliability and reduce unplanned downtime.
- Review PMs, inspection forms, maintenance history, and field observations to identify improvement opportunities.
- Identify recurring equipment issues, support root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to improve uptime.
- Use work order, rework, craft utilization, and KPI data to improve maintenance performance.
Technical Expertise & Troubleshooting
- Provide technical support for troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, diesel, welding, rigging, plumbing, and control system issues.
- Read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, blueprints, and equipment documentation.
- Apply diagnostic tools and knowledge of sensors, PLC logic, and industrial control systems; Allen-Bradley experience is preferred.
Administrative & Documentation Responsibilities
- Maintain & update accurate work hours for team, work order documentation, equipment records, maintenance history, and related reports.
- Recommend cost-saving opportunities related to labor, training, parts, supplies, and maintenance processes.
- Manage applicable Management of Change requirements for maintenance work and equipment changes.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Required
- 5+ years of relevant maintenance and/or supervisory experience.
- Strong experience and knowledge of industrial maintenance practices, including hydraulics, welding, diesel repair, rigging, low voltage electrical systems and troubleshooting.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, blueprints, and equipment documentation.
- Strong leadership, communication, coaching, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work any shift, overtime, weekends, holidays, outages, and on-call assignments as needed.
- Competent in using a CMMS system as well as Microsoft office suite of at least outlook, excel and word.
Preferred
- 5+ years of relevant Mine maintenance supervisory experience.
- Underground production mining experience.
- PLC and Allen-Bradley experience.
- Experience in utilizing mobile equipment software i.e. – Cummins insight, Caterpillar SIS, etc.
- Bachelor or equivalent degree
- Relevant certifications in the maintenance space
WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to wear required PPE, including steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, hard hat, harness, electrical PPE, and other job-specific protective equipment.
- Ability to work underground, outdoors, in production areas, elevated and in varying temperatures.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as climbing, bending, squatting, reaching, standing, walking, and working on elevated platforms.
- Must be physically able to access underground, surface, plant, and equipment work areas.
