Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.

As our Mechanical Engineering Manager (MEM ), you will be responsible for delivering annual maintenance targets and ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient performance of mining equipment across the operation. You will provide technical leadership and expert advice to the Long-Term Planner and Maintenance Superintendents to optimise equipment availability, reliability, and performance.

This is a statutory position accountable for establishing and maintaining mechanical engineering practices that comply with the relevant Coal Mining Act and Regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all mechanical engineering standards, systems, and practices across the mine.
  • Maintain statutory compliance for mechanical plant, equipment, and personnel.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve safe, efficient, reliable, and cost-effective mechanical engineering systems and procedures.
  • Drive performance improvements through engineering initiatives and equipment enhancements.
  • Provide visible leadership by developing and communicating mechanical engineering strategies and plans across the workforce.
  • Establish and maintain competency-based training programs to ensure personnel are appropriately trained, authorised, and compliant with legislative requirements.
  • Contribute to the development and ongoing management of a robust five-year maintenance and engineering plan.
  • Develop and oversee rolling weekly maintenance plans and schedules to achieve equipment availability and reliability targets.
  • Establish engineering standards and provide approval for mechanical plant, equipment design, technical specifications, and personnel qualifications.
  • Ensure statutory mechanical overhauls are completed to the required standard in a safe, timely, and cost-effective manner.
  • Monitor maintenance expenditure, identify budget variances, and implement corrective actions and improvement initiatives to optimise operating costs.

Qualifications

  • Mechanical trade qualification with extensive experience in underground coal mining operations.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering are highly regarded; postgraduate qualifications in Maintenance Management will be advantageous.
  • Demonstrated experience in asset management and maintenance planning.
  • Strong leadership capability with the ability to influence, coach, and uphold mechanical engineering standards.
  • High-level knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements relating to statutory mechanical compliance in underground coal mining.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement maintenance strategies that improve equipment reliability and operational performance.
