Anglo American Steelmaking Coal

Steelmaking Coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world.

Dawson Mine is a large and dynamic open cut steelmaking coal mine operation made up of two operating pits - Central and South. It commenced operations in 1961 and is one of the oldest coal mining operations in Central Queensland with no signs of slowing down. Dawson Mine is rich in history, it was the first mine in Australia to export coal to Japan in 1961 and was the first mine to introduce draglines into its operation in 1963 – join the legacy today!

Dawson Mine is excited to announce an exceptional opportunity for a Maintenance Superintendent: HME to join the Maintenance Leadership Team at Dawson Mine on a full-time, permanent basis with Anglo American.

Reporting to the Engineering & Maintenance Manager, you will provide leadership, strategic direction, supervision, oversight and a safe working environment to the Maintenance HME Workshop. You will ensure planned maintenance and servicing of site HME equipment is carried out efficiently and safely, while adhering to maintenance strategies with your dedicated maintenance crews. In addition, you will also manage equipment breakdown events and liaise with the Production leadership team to ensure safe continuous operations at Dawson Mine.

The key accountabilities are, not limited to:

  • Manage the performance and availability of Dawson’s fleet of heavy mobile equipment to achieve both operational and financial site objectives.
  • Be responsible for the maintenance work stream while ensuring the team takes responsibility for their tasks and work management requirements.
  • Provide clarity and direction that supports the effective performance of the Maintenance Department in terms of timing, budget and delivery.
  • Take the lead on improving reliability and equipment standards via your dedicated Reliability Engineers and collaborating with the Planning Superintendent.
  • Attend daily site meetings to provide operational availability and performance of all heavy mobile equipment, upcoming planned events and collaborate closely with the production department.
  • Manage, coach and mentor supervisors, and maintenance crew personnel.
  • Oversee your department’s headcount in collaboration with HR whilst working within budget, make hiring decisions and partake in recruitment for the fulfill of vacancies within your department.
  • Provide strategic direction by communicating asset strategies, BARA inputs, and the Plan on a Page across the HME function.
  • Monitor and report on maintenance KPIs, cost forecasts, downtime data integrity, and alignment of planning outputs with site priorities.
  • Lead team capability development, OEM engagement, risk and compliance processes, and cost control activities including budgeting, forecasting, and governance of unplanned spend.
  • Other requirements as assigned by the Engineering & Maintenance Manager.

Qualifications

Ideally, the successful applicant will have:

  • Demonstrated experience and capability in a progressive maintenance leadership role within the Resources industry (preferably open-cut coal).
  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering or a related discipline (i.e. Master of Engineering Management) or relevant trade qualifications and industry experience.
  • Supervisor & Risk Facilitator competencies (S1, 2, 3 & G2, G3).
  • Demonstrated team management and leadership ability and experience.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, OEM knowledge (CAT & Komatsu) and heavy machinery used in mining operations.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identify and address mechanical challenges.
  • Strong understanding and capability in safety culture and leadership concepts, practical application of risk assessment; hazard identification and controls; and incident management and investigation.
  • Good understanding of business and finance goals in conjunction with overall project requirements.
