Position Information TxDOT's South Travis Maintenance Office is looking for an Maintenance Section Assistant based in Austin, Texas. This position performs skilled transportation maintenance activities and leads a crew of Transportation Maintenance Technicians. This position reports to a Maintenance Section Supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. The work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. The work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.Salary Plan/Grade:Maintenance Section Assistant: A22 ($57,614.00 - $93,138.00/yearly)

Position Description

This position assists a Maintenance Section Supervisor in overseeing work completed by the crews and contractors, which provides a safe driving thoroughfare within a designated geographical area. Leads the work of transportation maintenance crews and support staff. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.Essential Duties: The essential duties for a Maintenance Section Assistant include: Assists in budget preparation for the sectionAssists the maintenance section supervisor in overseeing the work of the section and contracted crews including scheduling equipment, material and personnel necessary for section projectsAssists with planning, coordinating and implementing emergency response to inclement weather, accidents, and hazardous spills affecting area roadways Ensures all projects follow established safety guidelinesHandles public complaintsInspects road conditions, work-in-progress and work completed by the crews and contractorsLeads the work of transportation maintenance crews and support staffMay operate light and heavy roadway equipmentResponsible for operations of section in absence of supervisorServes as lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coveragePerforms other job duties as assigned. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Minimum Qualifications: Education:High School Grad or Equivalent in general educationExperience:6 YEARS of experience in roadway maintenance or construction related work (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent) Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum QualificationsLicenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Commercial Driver CertificateCommercial Class "A" Driver's License at time of hire. Competencies: Competencies required for a Maintenance Section Assistant include:Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance workMaterials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenanceIncident management proceduresScheduling work assignmentsAdministrative support practices and procedures to include writing, editing, and report writing techniques, recording meeting notes, record keeping and records managementUsing light highway equipmentLeading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others, Coordinating labor, materials, and equipmentMaintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Subject to inside and outside environment conditionsSubject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hourSubject to noiseSedentary work: Lift up to 10lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small toolsLight work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently life or carry objects up to 10 lbs Standing-prolonged periods of timeWalking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to anotherTalking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken wordsHearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication Conditions of Employment: Please read the Standard Conditions of Employment (TxDOT) for all positions.This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical. - Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
