The Job You Will Perform
Observes electrical devices in operation and determines causes of trouble
Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts
Adjusts functional parts of devices, control instruments, and programs.
Troubleshoots drives, contactors, fuses, motor starters, HMIs, PLCs, low voltage control wiring and AC voltages up to 480VAC.
Starts devices to test their performance
Position requires pushing toolbox to work areas
Requires carrying, lifting, and transporting of parts to and from work location and maintenance shop by hand or mechanical means
Cleans work area, tools, and equipment
Assist with mechanical repairs as time and need allows
Safety and Equipment Use
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory and includes cut-resistant and heat-resistant gloves and sleeves, safety glasses, goggles, face shields, bump caps, ear plugs, and steel-toed shoes. The job involves continuous use of hand tools ranging from small screwdrivers to large pipe wrenches, requiring both fine dexterity and physical force.
Electrical and Mechanical Systems
Additional responsibilities include plant startup and shutdown tasks, energizing equipment, and ensuring proper operation. The position involves installing power supply wiring and conduit for new machines, connecting power and communication cables, diagnosing and repairing electrical apparatus such as transformers, motors, relays, switches, and printed circuit boards. Maintenance of electric motors, including bearing replacement and rewiring, is required. Planning and installing wiring layouts and conduits in buildings fall under the job scope as well.
Installs power supply wiring and conduit for newly installed machines and equipment such as conveyors and programmable controllers
Connects power supply wires to machines and equipment, and connects cables and wires between machines and equipment
Diagnoses malfunctioning apparatus such as transformers, motors, and lighting fixtures and replaces damaged or broken wire and cables
Replaces faulty electrical components on machine such as relays, switches, and motors, and positions sensing devices
Diagnoses and repairs or replaces faulty electronic components, such as printed circuit boards
Replaces electric motor bearings and rewires motors
Plans layout of wiring and installs wiring, conduit, and electrical apparatus in buildings
Administrative and Communication Duties
The role requires utilizing a computer system for work order entry and tracking completion status. It also involves initiating purchase orders for parts and machines and keeping supervisors informed of any problems or unusual situations. Other duties may be assigned by supervision.
