About this position:

Under the supervision of the Region Construction & Maintenance Supervisor, this position serves as a member of the Northwest Region maintenance team in the maintenance and construction of planned, preventative and deferred maintenance projects throughout the Pacific Northwest assisting Parks from Tacoma to the Canadien border, including all the San Juan Islands. The Maintenance Mechanic 1 is responsible for coordinating and performing new construction, renovation, remodel, repair, inspection, and maintenance of State Park buildings, facilities, grounds, equipment, and vehicles.

This position is not eligible to telework, as physical on-site presence is required to perform essential functions.

*This position requires travel and overnight travel. Percentage of travel varies based on season and work required but can be up to 50-80% of the time between parks and statewide for meetings, training, and other field work.

Examples of duties

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Perform general work in maintenance, repair, remodel, and alteration in construction and maintenance of area facilities, grounds, vehicles, and equipment.
• Perform preventative maintenance to park buildings and other park facilities.
• Maintain and repair irrigation, plumbing, and sewage systems with the ability to provide minor electrical repairs.
• Coordinate with management, other employees, volunteers, and correctional crews during maintenance and repair projects.
• Independently operates vehicles necessary to carry out job duties.
• Coordinate with management, other employees, volunteers and correctional crews during maintenance and repair projects.
• Maintain health and safety standards.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Two (2) years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work.

AND

• Valid unrestricted (except corrective lenses) driver's license.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience working at State Parks or similar parks and recreation entity.
• Entry level experience driving and operating a variety of vehicles and equipment.
• Experience leading and/or supervising lower-level staff.
• Knowledge and experience in the use of Microsoft Office products, such as Outlook, Excel, and Word.
• Knowledge and experience working with various hand & power tools.

Uniform Information: All Maintenance Mechanic 1 employees are required to wear a uniform. A complete and properly worn uniform helps establish the professional identity of a Maintenance Mechanic and promotes respect as a Washington State Parks employee. All Maintenance Mechanic 1s will receive 6 shirts within the first year (2 shirts per calendar year after the first year), 1 jacket every 3 years, 1 baseball cap every year, 1 safety vest every 3 years, and a clothing stipend of $200 per year, and a $250 boot stipend every 2 years. Uniform stipends are intended to offset the cost of clothing worn in the workplace such as pants, boots, raingear, etc.

Working Conditions: Work schedule is 10 hours per day, four (4) days a week, Monday through Thursday. Typical work hours are 10 hours per day from 6 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Incumbent may be expected to adjust work scheduled to meet business needs and must maintain regular and reliable attendance to accommodate office and customer demands.

This position is expected to travel between parks and/or statewide for meetings, training, and other field work. Travel will be necessary in all types of weather conditions and climates. Due to the distance between parks, expected travel status will be for the week and overnight travel is expected to be 95% of the time.
