Position Purpose summary:

Reporting to the Support Services Manager and working as a member of the interdisciplinary team, the Maintenance Worker II is responsible for providing engineering and maintenance duties for Agape Hospice

Accountabilities:

  • Plan, schedule and perform skilled maintenance/repairs, daily tests, checks and operational procedures of all plant machinery and systems including boilers, pumps, fans, valves, piping, controls, pressure vessels, air filtration, motors, chillers, water softeners, fire protection and nurse call systems according to all current codes, manufacturers specification and AHS policies.
  • Perform building architectural systems, maintenance repairs, minor construction and renovations duties, including constructing simple wooden articles or structures such as partitions, ramps, boxes, stands, bulletin boards and counters; repairs furniture, doors, windows, and flooring (tiles, linoleum, carpet, etc.); repair walls (tiled, plastered, etc.) and surfaces; repair ceilings and ceiling tile systems; concrete placing, patching and repairs, painting and finishing duties. Coordination and supervising repair activities
  • Operate Building management system by checking and recording readings.
  • Perform year-round grounds keeping duties and maintains aesthetic appearance of building and its grounds.
  • Assist contractors and outside service and utility agencies with the installation and repair of certified equipment.
  • Record and maintain files on physical equipment and machinery. (5%)
  • Requisition supplies and/ or equipment; assist in monitoring department expenses.
  • Act as the building Fire Marshall on scheduled shifts; in collaboration with the Executive Director and the Educator, arrange regular fire drills and ensure monthly inspection reports are completed; participates as a member of the Joint Health &Safety Committee representing Maintenance, by attending meetings and by providing input into incident reviews and follow-up.
  • Provide security support and services in the facility, specifically on weekends and statutory holidays and as requested.
  • Logs, maintains, and records work performance; completes times sheets, and where requested may participate in new staff orientation and selection.

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

  • Internal: Staff and residents of Agapé Hospice.
  • External: Families/visitors of residents.

MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Reports directly to: Support Services Manager
  • Direct reports: None

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

  • Ensure that all facilities and equipment are maintained according to the Agapé Hospice standards.

Working Conditions:

  • Expose to very high levels (>30 Deg. C) with requirement to work in a mechanical room for extended periods of time.
  • Expose to high noise level in some of the mechanical rooms requiring the use of hearing protection.
  • Some exposure to dust when working in certain areas.
  • Some exposure to hazards from mechanical equipment when working on equipment requiring repair.
  • Working with equipment and piping results in an environment where the potential for burns does exist.
  • Use of sharp tools and other potentially hazardous tools is part of the regular scope of work.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications:

  • Completion of a Building Operator A or B and/or 5th Class Power Engineering program required. Additional trade such as Plumber, Electrician, Carpenter an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must have a vehicle, valid driver’s license and insurance and current WHMIS certification

Experience and Knowledge:

  • Intermediate technical/professional experience (i.e. 3-5 years)
  • 3-5 years experience in the operation and maintenance of a commercial or health care facility preferred
  • Must have experience in Building Maintenance System programs.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Must be able to make informed, timely decisions in collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Must be self-motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal
  • Must be skilled in the use of hand and power tools
  • Must demonstrate initiative and judgement
  • Good communication skills and be able to work in a team setting.
  • Reliability and punctuality are essential
  • Able to observe all safety precautions and safe work practices.

This is a casual posiiton with no fixed schedule hors.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $27.00 to $28.24 with a maximum of $29.47.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
