Maintenance Engineering Manager – Scunthorpe Operations

Purpose of Position

Reporting to the Operations Manager , the Maintenance Engineering Supervisor oversees all site maintenance activities across Brenntag's Scunthorpe Facilities to ensure the safe, compliant and efficient running of plant operations, equipment, and associated assets.

The role has a strong focus on DSEAR/ATEX compliance, hazardous-area equipment, and the maintenance of semi‑automated machinery within liquid processing operations.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, coach, and develop the Maintenance Engineering team across two sites, promoting a high-performance culture and the value of Safety First.

  • Manage performance, capability development, and resource allocation for all site maintenance engineers to provide a flexible, cross-functional resource to cover planned maintenance and emergency repairs across both sites

  • Ensure all team activities follow company policies, Process Safety Management procedures, and statutory requirements.

Maintenance Planning & Delivery

  • Oversee all planned, preventive, and reactive maintenance to maximise asset uptime and minimise operational disruption.

  • Plan and prioritise maintenance workloads across engineering personnel.

  • Manage the CMMS (SHIRE), ensuring accurate asset records, work orders, and maintenance routines.

  • Monitor maintenance KPIs and contractor performance.

  • Oversee maintenance contracts such as air compressors, deionised water plant, and effluent treatment systems.

DSEAR/ATEX & Hazardous Area Compliance

  • Ensure all equipment and installations in DSEAR-regulated zones comply with ATEX legislation.

  • Lead hazardous-area inspections and ensure timely resolution of non-conformances.

  • Maintain hazardous-area documentation.

  • Ensure repairs and modifications to ATEX equipment maintain certification integrity.

Semi-Automated Machinery & Process Equipment

  • Oversee maintenance of semi-automated systems including pumps, mixers, conveyors, automated valves, pneumatics, and process instrumentation.

  • Ensure machine safety systems comply with PUWER.

  • Support fault-finding on automated systems.

  • Ensure automation upgrades follow Management of Change.

Project & Contractor Management

  • Support engineering projects including plant upgrades, automation improvements, and hazardous-area remediation.

  • Manage specialist contractors and ensure compliance with site safety requirements.

  • Support project scoping, planning, documentation, and commissioning.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with DSEAR, ATEX, COMAH, PUWER, LOLER, Electricity at Work, and Confined Space Working.

  • Ensure adherence to the Permit-to-Work system.

  • Promote a strong safety culture.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify reliability improvements and maintenance optimisation opportunities.

  • Support engineering-led performance and cost improvement initiatives.

Experience & Knowledge

  • Proven experience in a leadership role, developing a motivated, engaged and high performing team

  • Experience in a safety-critical, regulated environment.

  • Strong background in process engineering preferably within Bulk Tank Farm and flammable liquids handling operations

  • Working knowledge of COMAH, DSEAR/ATEX, PUWER, LOLER, and similar legislation.

  • CMMS experience (SHIRE or similar).

  • Understanding of maintenance for semi-automated / automated filling & process equipment would be advantageous

  • Understanding of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies

  • Budgetary Control and Project Management Experience

Education

  • Degree/HND in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or related discipline)

  • NEBOSH General Certificate

  • COMPEX Ex01–Ex04 qualification.
