Summary

This is a skilled position involving electrical construction and maintenance activities. Work involves responsibility for performing skilled electrical tasks in the maintenance of airfield and building electrical systems, a wide variety of electrical equipment, and fixtures. Assignments are usually given via a work order and processing software, but may also be received orally, accompanied by sketches or blueprints. Work is performed independently, with considerable latitude in determining materials and work methods. Work is subject to inspection by a superior during progress and upon completion.

Examples of duties

• Plans layout and installation of electrical wiring and conduit supporting airfield navigational aids, lighting, signs, and other aeronautical equipment in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration design standards.
• Plans layout and installation of electrical wiring and conduit throughout Airport buildings (offices, hangars, and electrical vaults), ensuring compliance with building codes.
• Inspects, repairs, and installs electrical panels, switches, motors, and electronic and monitoring control systems for building and airfield systems (ex., airfield lighting control and monitoring systems, air handlers, lighting, and emergency backup generators).
• Tests and maintains uninterrupted power supplies, emergency backup generators, distribution switchgear, lighting and controls, motor control centers, power monitoring equipment, and automated vehicle gate controllers.
• Participates in installing, checking, and inspecting for proper operation of automatic switchboards, electronic control systems, electric storage batteries, meters, instruments, and related electrical apparatus and equipment.
• Inspects electrical panels and systems to ensure safety, efficient function, and uninterrupted usage of electrical systems.
• May be required to participate in and/or facilitate training to support departmental or City initiatives and requirements.
• May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the airport.
• Position is designated as Emergency and Essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma from an accredited school or a GED.
• Four years of experience as an electrician apprentice.
• One year of experience as a journeyman (post-licensure).
• Must possess and maintain an electrician’s license issued by the State of Florida.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Must possess and maintain a valid telephone number.
• May be required to pass an elevated background check provided by the City of Lakeland Police Department upon hire.
• Must pass a ten-year fingerprint-based criminal history records check (CHRC) and security threat assessment (STA) ongoing.
• Must be able to obtain the Airport Certificate Employee (ACE) – Airfield Lighting Maintenance certification from the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) within two years of hire.

• Practices, methods, tools, and materials used in the electrical trade.
• Construction and functions of various electrical equipment, such as transformers, constant current regulators, motors, pumps, air conditioners, and related equipment.
• Various electrical testing devices, including voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, wattmeters, and related devices.
• Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the electrical trade.
• Repair and maintenance of air-conditioning equipment.

SKILLS:

• Locating and adjusting defects in electrical systems and equipment.

ABILITIES:

• Understand and follow oral or written instructions and read and interpret sketches, diagrams, and blueprints.
• Communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with airport users, tenants, contractors, government agencies, City employees, and the public.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, stretching, and/or lifting all of the time; involves exerting up to 50 pounds of force regularly and/or exceptional skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
• Working in crawl spaces and at significant heights, including climbing up and down ladders and stairs.
• Risks exposure to bright/dim light, dust, pollen, extreme heat/cold, wet/humid conditions, extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife, vibration, fumes, noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, and heights.
• Normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of taste, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
