The Washington Military Department (WMD) is seeking a detailed-oriented Maintenance Custodian to join our team. The ideal candidate takes pride in maintaining clean, safe, and well-functioning facilities while contributing to a positive environment for staff, visitors, and customers. This role plays a vital part in ensuring our building operations run smoothly through routine cleaning, basic maintenance tasks, and proactive problem-solving.

The Maintenance Custodian reports to the Maintenance Mechanic 4 for the East Region (Yakima) of the State Maintenance and Support Services Branch of the Construction and Facilities Management Office and will be responsible for general cleaning duties, minor repairs, equipment upkeep, and supporting overall facility needs. Strong attention to detail, time management skills, and the ability to work independently are essential for success in this position.

Responsibilities include:

Janitorial maintenance and routine cleanliness of assigned buildings and work areas.

  • Clean facilities
  • Ordering supplies
  • Collects and transports solid waste to dumpsters

Routine minor maintenance on assigned buildings and equipment.

  • Plumbing
  • Electrical
  • Minor building repairs
  • Maintains and performs minor repairs to powered janitorial tools and equipment

Qualifications


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

One year of experience in janitorial services, grounds maintenance, building maintenance, and/or construction.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED.

Experience:

  • Custodial-related efforts and equipment repairs.
  • Minor maintenance repair.

Working Knowledge of:

  • Cleaning methods, safety practices, chemical, equipment and supplies used in general custodial work.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the building trades.

Skills and Abilities to:

  • Perform light building maintenance.
  • Operate custodial appliances.
  • Operate and drive light truck to transport supplies and equipment, haul refuse/garbage.
  • Operate and maintain powered janitorial tools and equipment.
  • The ability to take action to learn and grow.
  • The ability to take action to meet the needs of others.
  • Use Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and SharePoint).

Compensation: Wage/salary depends on qualifications or rules of promotion.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Background Investigation:
Must successfully complete the appropriate background checks required for employment. Must be willing to sign releases of information and shall not have access to any investigative materials and files. The processing of background checks can take up to six months post-employment. Failure to successfully pass a background check may be cause for termination.

Union Shop Provision: This position is represented by Washington Public Employees Association (WPEA).

Driver's License:

  1. Valid to drive in the State of Washington.
  2. Must meet requirements of the REAL ID Act. This is required for base access and will be required upon hire.


Military Facility: Willingness to work on a Military Controlled Access Installation.

Camp Murray utilizes the Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) for entry to the installation. Must meet access requirements / background check which can be found in the Camp Murray Access Requirements Policy (Unified Policy No. 18-01). This includes possession of an Enhanced Driver’s License, or other REAL ID Compliant Identification.


Work Hours A choice between a Tuesday through Friday (4/10 schedule), Monday through Thursday (Monday - Thursday), or Monday through Friday (5/8 schedule). Actual hours will start no earlier than 6:00am and end no later than 6:00pm and will include core business hours of 8:00am to 4:00pm.

Telework: This position is not eligible for telework.

Emergency Assignment: Upon activation of the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) or Joint Field Office (JFO), incumbent may be required to work in an alternate location with rotating shifts, including weekends and evenings, in a highly stressful and fast-paced environment.

Travel: Occasional statewide travel may be required up to 5% to include overnight stays.
